"Did you just see how Louis did that? Jesus Christ." This is pretty much my reaction to everything Lou does. If he had a fan club, I'd be in it. I've been there to witness most of it--we have engaged in some sort of fitness related activity together, be it lifting, ninja warrior, calisthenics, gymnastics, martial arts or climbing, for 7 years.
Today, we packed some supplies into his van, as he will shortly embark on an indefinite cross-country trip, discarding the security of a 'traditional' settled life and instead becoming a vagabond (no negative connotation), exploring new places and creating new experiences. I am thrilled for him. I couldn't possibly be more supportive and I am looking forward to the photos, videos, trinkets and narration as it happens in real time.
I will miss Louis a lot when it comes time to climb. I often use him as a gauge when it comes to progress: if he can do something with great ease, maybe with struggle, grit and a few weeks of dedicated persistence, I can just barely pull it off. His absence will also be felt when we're training gymnastics or calisthenics at Ninja Park (Brown Street Park). I don't know too many people who can do a perfect, no kip, 6 second ring muscle-up. He elevates what I think is reasonable/possible and pushes me to push myself.
However, what I appreciate about Lou the most has nothing to do with fitness; it's his sense of purpose. He views helping others as the greatest form of a life well lived. Most people don't like to discuss political involvement, volunteer work, human welfare, charity and community action, so I oblige them. I largely keep it to myself. Not with this guy. Rarely have two fitness bros discussed plans and modes to better the community, the region and the world more than us. Listening to his plans for sustainable community farming and nerding out over the 4 main Green Party pillars and 10 key values was the highlight of my day.
Anyways, IG only allows for 2,200 characters and I could easily triple that. Louis is gonna do a bunch of dope stuff, see cool shit and meet interesting people. For anyone who wants to follow his journey, please follow @louismatracia
, as he will be documenting it!
