#Repost @lydiakia ・・・ I’m gunning for a #naturalchildbirth . And while I’m preparing mentally, emotionally and psychologically... my pragmatic mind always goes first to the physical - cuz it’s is physiological birth. I find it key to first understand what machanics are involved in labor and then get to work optimizing those machanics. As a former D1 athlete (🙌🏿humble brag🙌🏿) I first went toward power and strength but as my body started talking back to me - in the form of ouchiness all the time - I realized that for me, a pain free pregnancy (and hopefully an easier labor) is rooted in mobility... balance and muscular/skeletal suppleness. Spinning Babies is a game changer for this, it’s a program designed to optimize the physical relationship between the bodies of the mother and baby for the easing of childbirth. The ligaments that attach to the uterus impact the way the baby positions itself, so it makes perfect sense to me that I’d want to release those and improve alignment. _____________ #spinningbabies #gailtully #changingbirthonearth #wheresbaby #easierbirth #fetalpositioning #empoweredbirth #childbirth #pregnant #pregnancy #pregnantlife #preggers #midwife #midwifelife #midwifery #doulalife #doula #birthdoula #birth #birthworkers #birthwithoutfear #expecting #prenatal #birthmatters #maternitycare #childbirtheducation #prenatalbodywork #laboranddelivery

Some feelings you may experience include: . Feeling that the surgery could have been avoided; blaming yourself . Feeling powerlessness or out of control . Feeling disappointed, humiliated, or disassociated from the experience . Feeling like a failure, defective, or less than a woman . Feeling that you were violated and that your birth experience was akin to rape or abuse . Feeling that your birth happened TO you, that you were not a participant . Feeling that you were mutilated . Feeling that no one believes or hears you . Feeling unable to hear other women’s birth stories (the bad ones act as triggers, and the good ones make you envious) . You might have a hard time connecting with your baby . . You may blame your baby (your partner, your doctor, your family and so on) for what happened You might feel that no one can possibly understand. . #honeydewholistics #csection
Day 11 #thebeinginbusiness How has my business evolved since it began? The first year of my business has been spent exploring boundaries, defining who I am as a Doula, discovering how and where I work best and learning what needs to be in place so I can give my best to my clients. Progress has been slow but steady. There have been many twists and turns and I am learning more everyday. At first I set out purely to offer #postnataldoula support but I have found myself increasingly offering #pregnancysupport especially for mum's with #epilepsy and also becoming a peer supporter for @pregnancysicknesssupport I have realised that working alongside other Doulas- surrounding clients with a network of Doula love is what I really enjoy the most and where I hope to develop more business. I am also now certain that I will expand my antenatal and postnatal Doulaing to include full Birth Doula work at some point so that I will eventually be offering a whole holistic Doula support package for the entirity of a families child bearing year. For me Doulaing is a reflective practice, constantly changing and evolving with each new client. ✨❤ Image by the beautiful @spiritysol #shemeansbusiness #doularising #doula #birthofabusiness #birthworkers @thefreestylecoach @thewhitethistle
This is such a great tip from @blossomingbelliesbirth for #expectantparents , #doulas and any #birthworkers ! With the knowledge that the majority birth on their backs, let’s help facilitate optimal positioning for the #birthingperson and Baby with just a little tweak. The benefits to just this simple change can be huge ! No need to bring another labor supply, you can use a towel or even a rolled up sheet that are available in the hospital 👶 ♥️ #Repost @blossomingbelliesbirth with @get_repost ・・・ Reclined #pushing positions! 👶🏼 You know I love upright positions for pushing #babies out but the reality is that many people #birth on their backs. 💫 Here’s a simple tip to open up space in the lower portion of the pelvis and lessen the likelihood and severity of perineal tearing when birthing reclined 👍🏽🌟#knowyouroptionsinbirth #healthybirth #thisisyourbirth #phillybirthclass #topchildbirthclassphilly #blossomingbelliesbirth

Maternal death following a C-section is increased by 4 times in emergency situations and 3 times in elective surgery. ❤ Infection is one of the most common complications following a C-section, particularly infection of the bladder caused by use of a catheter for the operation. ❤ Wound or incision site infection is also very common, and can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort, sometimes leading to long-term problems which require ongoing use of antibiotics and further surgery. ❤ Women who give birth by C-section are more likely to suffer from a hemorrhage than women who give birth vaginally. The blood loss is usually the result of blood vessels being cut. The risk of severe blood loss increases substantially with increasing numbers of C-sections. ❤ As with any surgery, women who undergo C-sections are at risk of thrombophlebitis – inflammation of the wall of a vein, which may result in the formation of a blood clot in the legs or pelvic organs. If a blood clot travels to the lungs, this is known as a pulmonary embolism and can be life threatening. ❤ There is a risk of endometritis (inflammation and infection of the membrane lining of the uterus). This painful condition can cause fever and a foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Treatment may include evacuating the uterus of any remaining pregnancy tissue, and a course of antibiotics. ❤ It’s possible to have a reaction to the anaesthesia. For example, some women experience severe headaches when standing upright in the days following the operation which is often referred to as a spinal headache. ❤ While rarely occurring, C-section surgery carries the risk of surgical injuries to nearby organs, with bladder injuries being the most common. If this happens, additional surgeries may be needed to repair the damage. ❤ Around half of all women who have C-section will have adhesions. These are bands of scar tissue that can cause your organs to join together or attach to the abdominal wall. This causes the organs to twist and stretch, causing pain and future health problems. ❤ The risk of requiring a hysterectomy during or after C-section birth is greater than vaginal birth.

Between 1965 and 1987, the rate of cesarean sections rose 455%. In the US, the C-section rate continues to skyrocket. In 1965, a little over 4% of all babies were born surgically. Today, that figure is 1 in 3. . Around 30% of women are giving birth surgically by cesarean in high-income countries like Australia, Britain and America. These are often due to non-medical reasons, such as convenience (for the mother or care doctor). . With the number of non-medically required C-sections this high, the concern is many women are being exposed unnecessarily to significant risks. . These invasive procedures can cause major health complications and have been linked as a contributing factor in the increase of the maternal death rate. They require intensive surgery, and are associated with higher health and safety risks. . . For the mother, there is the possibility of postpartum complications such as internal bleeding, infections and infertility. And babies delivered via C-section face an increased risk of breathing problems, juvenile diabetes, allergies, and asthma. . #honeydewholistics #csection #maternalhealth #postpartumdepression
Link in profile for the day*** "The success of the #MeToo movement has hinged on the unity of many voices to flip power dynamics that once kept countless victims silent. As that dialogue expands, more people are recognizing a similar pattern of health-care providers overriding people’s “no’s” in birth...from unwanted medication being administered without consent, to forced C-sections." #metoo #blackmidwives2018 #nbma #doula #birthworkers @blackmidwivesalliance • • •
The Placenta If you'd told me before having children that I would want to hold my placenta and actually get teary about it I would have said you're crazy. But I tell ya, there's something about this organ that I just LOVE! It is the unsung hero in pregnancy. It provides everything for our baby...it nourishes them, cleanses their body, and is their first connection that they form inutero. I become very emotional when I say thank you to my baby's placentas. The first birth I encapsulated most of it and buried the rest under a rose bush (for Sita Rose), the second I chose not to encapsulate and will be burying it under a willow tree (for Willow Moon). I took prints of both, and made sure the girls were present to say thank you as a family. I urge you to think about how you would like to remember your placenta. It might sound strange, but there is something just so beautiful about them...every one is unique in some way, and we owe them so much! Placentas are amazing! 💖 . . . . #nurtureinbirthjersey #day30 #placenta #placent #loveyourplacenta #pregnancyandbirth #4thtrimester #gratitude #givethanks #loveyourplacenta #honouryourplacenta #birtheducation #doula #fourthtrimester #empoweringbirth #empoweringwomen #thankyou #3rdstageoflabour #mindfulbirthing #birthofamama #birthworkers

If you wish to do any of the following things listed below, check your hospital or birthing center’s policy on placenta release. . Most will treat them as medical waste. If you wish to keep yours, then this usually has to be arranged in advance. . Also should a hospital insist on keeping it for a period, make sure arrangements are made to have the placenta frozen as soon as possible & request that no harmful chemicals be used on it. ❤ Eat It: Eating your placenta is known as placentophagy. It is thought to have many benefits in helping the woman to recover from birth and is standard practice in many cultures. ❤ The placenta is loaded with iron and B vitamins which are vital for restoring energy levels. It also contains estrogen and progesterone which are said to help balance the hormones and reduce the chance of postnatal depression. ❤ Consuming the placenta is also said to increase the mother’s milk supply. The most beneficial way of consuming it is to eat it raw and it should be well rinsed and cut into small pieces. Adding them to smoothies is a popular choice as this makes it more palatable. ❤ Encapsulation: If the thought of eating your placenta is too much for you, placenta encapsulation is an excellent and very popular alternative. The placenta is steamed or dehydrated before being ground down into a powder which is then put in capsules. ❤ Mothers can take the pills as they would vitamins with no taste to worry about. There are now many doulas that will provide this service for you. ❤ Lotus Birth: A lotus birth is the practice of leaving the umbilical cord uncut. The baby remains attached to the placenta until the cord separates at approx 3-10 days old. ❤ The belief behind lotus births is that cutting the cord is traumatic for the baby and keeping it attached for longer helps to ensure the baby receives everything it needs from it. ❤ When having a lotus birth, the placenta should be wrapped and placed in a bag or pouch. It should be patted dry and coated liberally with salt every 24 hours. Adding an essential oil such as lavender oil can help prevent any unwanted smells. . . #honeydewholistics #placenta #placentaencapsulation #lotusbirth
For most of human history, women were free to move about during labor. They were able to adopt upright positions that felt comfortable and eased the pain of contractions. ❤ It wasn’t until the 1700s that lying down to give birth became the norm, thanks to obstetricians who wanted easier access for examinations. They also found it more convenient to perform procedures such as episiotomies or forceps deliveries. ❤ Birth moved from homes into hospitals during the 1900s. The medical model of maternity care became entrenched in society, along with the expectation that women would labor on a bed. Flat on their back, and sometimes with their legs in stirrups. ❤ Here are some of the advantages of giving birth upright: . 1. Allows Gravity To Assist Baby’s Descent: Why work harder than you need to? When you’re lying down, you’re bearing the brunt of weight & force, which is going against gravity. . 2. Fewer Interventions: When you’re giving birth upright, you’re less likely to need interventions such as a vacuum device or episiotomies. When you’re working against gravity in a dysfunctional position, both you and your baby are more likely to need help. . 3. More Efficient Contractions: When you’re upright, your contractions will become much more efficient. If you’re lying on your back, your uterus will be contracting upwards, which is not working with your body, but against it. . . 4. Less Pain: When you’re off your back, you’ll experience less pain than you will giving birth lying down. This is because you have all the weight on your back and you’re working against gravity. . 5. Significantly Increases Pelvic Space: Lying down reduces the pelvic diameter by about 30%. Lying down is not going to help your body open as well as it could. Being upright opens up your pelvis, where as lying down closes it up. . #honeydewholistics #childbirth #laboranddelivery
Making something special for my doula and midwives, I wonder what it is! 😉 I am beyond thankful to have been in the care of midwives both for my pregnancy with Maxwell and now for my pregnancy with this little one. I look at them as so much more than just my midwives. They are my friends and I trust them to support me in so many ways. They care not just about the baby I'm growing but for me as a person and my mental state and I can't thank them enough for that. Just as well I am stupidly thankful for my doula @whenwomengather . Seriously, how did I do this the first time without her? She not only supports my decisions and shows me love but she empowers me in such an incredible and beautiful way. She makes me feel like I can conquer anything and is always there for me emotionally and physically and that is so special! Creating a birth plan empowers you to become informed of all your options during labor. At the same time, it’s a tool to let the team caring for you know about your preferences. . Although you may have in your mind how you want your baby’s birth to be, your choices may not be heard effectively if you don’t have a written birth plan. For example: . *Who do you want present in the delivery room? . *Do you want to be offered medication for pain management? . *If so, what type of medication? . * Do you want a natural birth and to use alternative measures for comfort? . *Do you want to freely move around during labor? . *Do you want to use hydrotherapy? . *Do you want your baby continuously monitored? . These are just a few items that can be included in your birth plan. . It does not end with the delivery of your new baby. The care team will need to know how you want your baby to be cared for in the hospital. . For example, explaining who will be cutting the umbilical cord, changing the baby’s first diaper and giving the baby his or her first bath. . In addition, the birth plan should indicate how you wish to feed your baby. Identifying breast milk or formula as a nutritional preference is also a very important item to include. . #honeydewholistics #pregnancy #childbirth #birthplan

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that about 1 in 9 women will suffer from postpartum depression which interferes with daily life and can last weeks and months if help’s not sought. . If you don’t have a support network close to you, this is where a postpartum doula can provide that valuable asset to both mother & baby in the first few days and weeks of being at home. . A postpartum doula will come to your house and provide help wherever needed. For example: . *Establishing and maintaining feeding whether this is by breast or bottle. . *Emotional & phyical recovery support. . *Help mothers cope with the new baby and their care such as changing, bathing and routines. . *Provide support with baby bonding. . *Guide moms on soothing baby techniques. . *Light housework. . *Meal preparation. . *Care of other children. . *Make referrals to additional support agencies (Lactation consultant, pediatrician, and support groups). . . #honeydewholistics #postpartumdoula #postpartumdepression #newborncare

Studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%. . Most doula-client relationships begin a few months before the baby is due. During this period, they develop a relationship in which the mother feels free to ask questions, express her fears and concerns, and take an active role in creating a birth plan. . During delivery, doulas are in constant & close proximity to the mother. They have the ability to provide comfort with pain-relief techniques including breathing exercises, aromatherapy, massage, herbal support, and laboring positions. . Doulas also encourage participation from the partner and offer reassurance. . A doula acts as an advocate for the mother, encouraging & helping her fulfill specific desires she might have for her birth. The goal of a doula overall is to help the mother experience a positive & safe birth. . . #honeydewholistics #birthdoula #naturalchildbirth

#FreedomFighterFriday love this artwork and love the sentiment. Family, can you see how our freedom is intrinsically linked to the sovereignty of our bodies? Knowledge is power. Not only in the cheesy western education way, but knowledge of self, knowledge of our bodies and our instinctual power, understanding how racism went to hide in the very institutions we put our trust in... including hospitals. Let’s rebuild our libraries with the information that sustained our ancestors through some of the toughest periods of our history. Let’s support each other and build communities that reflect not only our needs as people but specifically as women and for those who choose so, as mothers. On a spiritual level, a healthy yoni should have you feeling inspired, sexy and connected to Divine Love from a very rooted, grounded place. . On a physical level, a healthy yoni should take your whole body through a monthly moon cycle of balanced hormones, clean discharge, and un-clotted, un-painful bleeding. . All that you have to do is show her some holistic daily care. Here are some great ways to do so: . Use Vaginal probiotics: Probiotics are not just for your tummy. Your vagina could use a healthy helping of good bacteria, as well. Look for a plant-based option that's specifically for vaginal care. . Keep sex sacred: You deserve to be discerning of who you let into your most sacred space. Sex should always feel sacred, respected & creative. Protect the energy of your space of creation by only fueling it with the energy of those that love it as much as you do. . Eat a plant based diet: Eat lots of organic, whole fruits and veggies. A clean, whole foods diet keeps our yonis healthy & vibrant while also keeping our hormones balanced. . Stop using toxic maxi pads & tampons: With the many organic options we have today, don’t make excuses for your yoni anymore. Give her what she deserves that time of the month. . Stop washing with conventional soap: Gently wash the outside (not the inside!) with organic products that are specifically designed for it. I love the yoni wash by @thehoneypotco & @ashleysnaturals . And lastly, let it breathe: Remember to give your yoni room and time to breathe & regenerate daily. . . #honeydewholistics #yonicare #yoniverse

Fifty percent of the population owns a vagina, and yet people know almost nothing about the vagina or the vulva (let alone the clitoris), for example: . Two in three clitoris owners require clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm . . . meaning most vagina-owning people cannot have orgasms through penetrative sex alone. . All orgasms are clitorally based. Even the G-spot is linked to the clitoris. The G-spot is the apex of the internal clitoris. . The clitoris contains over 8,000 nerve endings and is made from homologous erectile tissue similar to that of the penis. The penis only contains 4,000 nerve endings. . The vaginal canal can expand to 200 percent of its normal size when aroused. The clitoris becomes enlarged, and the labia minora and majora swell and take on a darker shade of pink or red. . The vagina is a self-cleaning organ. You should never wash it with conventional soap or douche. This can throw off your pH balance, leading to an infection. . Vaginal discharge is perfectly normal and varies from woman to woman. Normal discharge is usually very light gray or clear. . Your vagina can stretch to accommodate an infant's head and then return to normal size The only thing that makes you looser is weakening Kegel muscles, which occurs with age. . Pubic hair protects the vagina from bacteria and acts as a barrier against friction. Shaving and waxing pubic hair has been linked to a higher likeliness of contracting STIs. . Plus, your pubic hair secretes pheromones, which is what attracts mates. . Vulvas and vaginas are not one-size-fits-all. Vaginas come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Your vagina is perfect the way it is 💕💕 . . #honeydewholistics #vagina #yoni #womb

This speaks to the heart of why Community Well was founded & is the reason SisterWeb was created. Health equity is a huge problem in our city & for women of color across the US, especially in the Southeast section of SF .................. . San Francisco announces plans to provide doulas for low-income mothers. September 4, 2018 San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Malia Cohen Tuesday announced a new program aimed at combating an alarming number of health problems in black and Pacific Islander babies and mothers. The plan is to train and provide doulas or birth companions. Records show nearly a quarter of all infant deaths in San Francisco are African Americans. They make up just five percent of the population. "This issue for me is an issue of equity, fairness and most importantly it's an issue of respect," said Cohen. Doulas are non-medical birth coaches who provide emotional and physical support to an expectant mother, and can act as liaisons between the mother and the doctors. But doulas can be expensive. Under the plan, low-income mothers would have access to them. "There are people who clearly need more than they are getting. And that is true of our black moms and our Pacific Islander moms. This is one thing we are doing to correct that," said Dr. Ayanna Bennett of the San Francisco Health Department. . "Sometimes women don't understand what the doctor is talking about. Sometimes they need that support. Someone to ask questions they are not thinking about," said Marna Armstead, who has been a doula for the past 12 years. Nationwide, black mothers die in childbirth at three times the rate of white mothers in the United States. Part of the program will be to recruit and train African-Americans and Pacific Islanders as doulas and have them work with those families. . "You get strong mothers and strong babies. It is something that creates a ripple effect and creates a stronger community, " said Marna Armstead. #doulas #birthworkers #healthequity #mothers #sisterweb #sisterwebdoulas #communitywellsf #sanfrancisco
