Kamal Jumblatt would have turned 101. Here's the story of the left-wing, Arab nationalist leader. Special thanks to @e3rafloubnan
Kamal Jumblatt was born in Mokhtara, Chouf, on 6 December 1917. At the young age of 26, he was launched into the leadership of the Jumblatt family, which exercised hegemony over parts of the Chouf.
However, he stood out as a socialist who created the Progressive Socialist Party in 1949, and his popularity quickly rose in a Lebanon torn between the pro-Western government and the left wing (Palestinians, Nasserists...) to which he belonged. He was very closely tied to the #USSR
, Abdel Nasser and the #PLO
. It was the Cold War after all.
He was elected MP from 1943 until his death in 1977, except during the 1956-1960 term, in which he lost in a clear act of cheating by the gov't. However, this only was an advantage to him. He was also appointed minister on numerous occasions; he notably legalized the #SSNP
Everyone sensed the civil war was coming, and Jumblatt tried to unite the left in a last bid to change the present system, under the flag of the Lebanese National Movement. However, the war broke out, and the LNM's military wings allied with the Palestinians; they quickly took over 70% of Lebanon. Then, Syria intervened to counter this expansion.
War didn't spare the Jumblatts. His sister was killed by "Ahrar Tigers" in 1976, and on 16 March 1977, he was assassinated by pro-Syrian militants, and the LNM quickly collapsed afterwards. The dream was over.
His son, Walid, took over. However, he didn't follow in his father's footsteps, making him a known opportunist, socialist only by name. He even regained the "Bayk" title that Kamal had rejected. Walid's son, Taymour, is now a #PSP
