After visiting The Manchester Christmas Market in the Albert Square I stopped to marvel at this beautiful gothic monument, this just shows how I have not ventured to explored Manchester since moving here, working out of the city and having Osiris - it’s disgraceful I know! But despite this I am making more of an effort to discover Manchester. Anyway! back to the Prince Albert monument, I am going to share some fleek facts I discovered with you. The ornate and grand canopy was created separately, the statue a tribute to the Prince after he passed away from Tb, Queen Victoria personally signed it off.
You can’t tell because it’s been well weathered, but the statue of the late Prince is actually made of marble. Also, within the canopies stand symbolic figures representing art, commerce, science and agriculture. Bet you didn’t know that aye? Below these, stand secondary figures! representing the most important disciplines at the time :
- The Four Arts: painting, architecture, music, sculpture
- Commerce: the Four Continents
- The Four Sciences: chemistry, astronomy, mechanics, mathematics
- Agriculture: the Four Seasons
Reading up on this, I love how much thought and passion went into designing it, it was such a different world back then but they made sure to leave their mark, if we were making this today which disciplines would you pick ? Who’s statue would you want in there? Coding and robotics as well as automation would have to be on there. The internet? Netflix and amazon? How about Prince Harry? Or Princess Diana?
