Live Q&A on Twitter is happening on Feb 13!! Send me your questions on @twitter
: What was one day you had while traveling to a place you weren’t completely keen on that changed your mind about the place?
Mackenzie: I will openly admit that Milan isn’t my favorite city. It’s beautiful, yes, but there was something about the city that made me go ‘meh.’ Reading that back makes me feel pretentious, but it wasn’t a place that made my heart pitter-patter. I was with a friend and we were hot and didn’t know what we wanted to do that day, so decided to take the train to see the Duomo (again) and get some gelato. Every day before this, it had been raining in Milan and today it was beautiful out. We grabbed our gelato and people watched outside the Duomo. We saw kids laughing and everyone trying to get that ‘perfect’ shot in front of the spectacular building and it made me laugh so hard. Because every single person was doing the exact same thing. I don’t know why that made me laugh or why it helped make Milan better for me, but it really really did. Also, I had gelato and that makes every day better.
: What is one of your favorite moments you've had on an airplane?
Mackenzie: When I was flying to Ireland, I ended up getting the middle seat and tried not to be too annoyed by this. As we're all settling into our seats and have taken off, the man next to me asks if he can change seats with me so he could sit next to his partner. Of course, I gladly accepted and moved seats with him. He then went on to tell me that him and his partner were flying to see family in Ireland for the first time in 5 years. They each had been so busy and flights were expensive and life, well, it got in the way. They had only told his sister that they were flying in and were going to surprise his mom on her birthday.
We landed and when we walked through to the arrivals gate where people were waiting, I saw him see his sister for the first time: They ran towards one another, holding on to each other and were crying very hard. It was so beautiful and moving and I felt very lucky to witness it.
: Who was the most interesting person you've ever met on a plane?
Shannon: Many years ago, I was on a flight back from Moscow. There was a lady sitting next to me that looked like she had a bird nest in her hair. I was over humans, and did not want to talk. She asked me what I did for a living, and I told her I was an accountant, hoping that would not create additional questions. I rudely blew her off and went to bed.
Before we were landing, I felt a little better toward my fellow (wo)man kind. I had a drink, and asked her what she did for a living. She told me was a Human Trafficking researcher, and had been on the Russian-Afghan border for the 5 months. WOW! Her life was way more interesting than mine.
We spent the final hours chatting away. I asked so many questions: She was with George Washington University, and had just met with some of the top academic brains in Russian to discuss her findings. She later told me about meeting Putin, as well.
Ya never know who you will meet on a plane, but this one one of my favorite (and interesting) conversations.
: What is the one place that has captured your heart that you’d go back to over and over again?
Shannon: There is no place like East Africa. The moment I stepped foot in Africa, I knew I need to find a way to get back there throughout my life. It is one of the most magical places in the world. Africa will make you feel small. You are guaranteed to realize in the nature world, humans are quite small and you are catnip! Kenya is the reason that Limitless Planet exists. There is nothing better than living in National Geographic!
