Are you feeling overwhelmed? Take a deep breath, and write it down. I know a lot of you are pushing through the last few exams until break! Or you're gearing up for the holidays which bring up their own set of stresses. Either way there's a lot of us feeling overwhelmed right now! The best way I've found to process and positively cope with anything that feels TOO BIG, TOO MUCH, or is buzzing around TOO LOUD inside my head... is writing it down. If you have a million tasks to complete - write a to do list. If you have some big feelings you can't quite pin down - start writing about them. You're overwhelmed by things around you and your current work load - write about it. Or in any case do all of the above! Writing things down take your thoughts from your brain 🤕 and put them on paper 🗒 This makes it easier to assess, see, and tackle what you need to tackle. It helps you prioritize tasks, understand your own feelings more, and process all these racing thoughts. There are so many reasons for why you should believe in yourself, if you don’t, here’s why it may help you with your life. 1. If you don’t believe in yourself, others won’t either. Whatever you believe, you will project out to those around you. If you express self-belief then others are going to believe in you, your values, your goals and your ideas. 2. Self-belief helps to strengthen self-confidence. This comes from the thoughts that you think about yourself and the way that you talk to yourself. Developing positive internal representations for yourself about yourself can strengthen your self-belief. 3. A strong sense of self-belief will allow you to override negative thoughts and to deal with failure. Instead of being consumed by what’s negative or what hasn’t worked out, your strong sense of self-belief will lift you out of the mindset that feels unresourceful when you are feeling challenged. Allow yourself to develop a strong sense of self-belief each and everyday. ❤️

Over Xmas there are often more social events to attend. For those who are shy and or socially anxious is can be a challenging time and can feel emotionally draining due to the energy consumed just to deal with our internal dialogue. Research has found that socially anxious, people tend to recall less about their surroundings, including details about other people . This is due to focusing inwardly, not outwardly and the tendency to focus on their imaginative representation of what they feel is happening or might happen rather than what is actually there. If the context we apply to a situation is our emotionally-based representation rather than a mindful view of what is, then this pattern of focus can cause us issues & distort our perception. . . Consciously focusing on our environment rather than ourselves can help us in many ways. It's been found that recalling the incidental details of painful memories – and widening the context, not the feelings – can help ease the effects of the memories. . . For example, if someone has overwhelmingly sad feelings about a memory, widening the context of that time by describing what people were wearing, what the decor was like, and other such incidental detail can be an effective way of helping contextualise the feelings around a memory and process it more easily. . . So if you feel socially anxious start to notice what there is to notice. . . What is the common theme of what people are wearing? . What is the decor like in the room? . What do you notice about the person you are talking to? . Anything that gets you to focus outwards. . Plan a few conversation starters and practice before the event. There are obviously other aspects to this which I will cover another time but I hope this Pocket of Wisdom is of some use. As always take what you like and leave the rest.

It feels like a lot, a mountain to climb everyday and can cause immediate anxiety in the morning... . 🌱How can you make this feel better? . 🌱Making a list before, the night before or try a little bullet journal ( basic no drawing and colouring, that's not the point and we end up thinking I need to learn calligraphy before I can have this, focus on getting organised and feeling organised first, then when you have time after go for it! ) . 🌱Turn those thoughts around, I have tried this for months and it's great! When I'm feeling ugggghhh! I've got to do this thing but I just don't feel motivated. I turn it around and say 'Hey you're lucky you get to do this' and I'm motivated I suddenly find enjoyment in it. It's truely about how you view your world. . Try it. . ***I have to say if you are in a situation that you dont feel comfortable in physically or verbally, not feeling safe or forced. Defensive Survival Thinking Styles . In cognitive therapies, there is a huge emphasis on correcting cognitive errors and discarding negative thinking styles, in favour of rational thinking. . But in the world of trauma therapy, we view these "negative" styles of thinking as Defensive Survival styles of thinking. When our nervous system is heavily biased towards neurocepting danger, due to past traumas, these forms of thinking are inevitable. . Instead of trying to get rid of these thinking styles, we can help by slowly therapizing the client's nervous system to come out of its defensive mode and to anchor itself more firmly in the safe and social neural network. . We can achieve this shift in a number of ways, using Polyvagal Theory, EMDR, somatic therapies, massage, yoga therapy, etc. . To me, this way of approaching therapy feels more empowering, less pathologizing and more in harmony with my client's whole self. . Good Food, Good Mood. When I’m feeling down it’s so easy for me to just want to fill up on my favourite foods like pasta, chocolate and cake. I can't even find strong enough words to properly portray how much Anxiety used to cause me to fear everyday life and social interactions😬. • I physically, mentally and emotionally was running on empty because I exhausted myself just hiding and making up excuses for not showing up in my own life😥. • I let myself down, I let others down and my anxiety quickly added depression to my struggles😭. I was tired all the time, so afraid to say yes to anything, horrified when the phone or doorbell would ring just at the thought of having to socialize📣. In this post I thought I would highlight some of the behaviours associated with anxiety and depression so that you can identify them and potentially help a loved one, a work colleague or even yourself. - They say that 1 in 4 people suffer with a mental ill health issue and it can be as high as fifty percent of adults who are in debt. - Anxiety sufferers really struggle to make decisions. They can be irritable & angry. They struggle with concentration & memory. They will often avoid certain situations. - Depression suffers often feel anxious. They too can get angry and often feel a tremendous amount of guilt. They feel hopeless and helpless which makes them feel extremely sad. - It is also worth looking out for how the person treats themselves. If they neglecting personal responsibility, blaming them self and being over critical these are red flags. If they display a loss of interest in appearance and hygiene then something is up for sure. - If you are concerned for someone then let them know that you are a non judgemental pair of ears if they want to talk. Let them know that you follow this account and signpost this way. All you can do is plant seeds and don’t force anything. That means you are growing, that means your are taking the lessons life throws at you and are implementing them. . You are under no obligation to be the same person you were a year ago, a month ago, or even an hour ago. You have the right to grow. No apologizes.
I often tell my clients that my goal is to help them become their own therapist. We work together to help them understand what they want their lives to look like, and then take action steps to get there. Hey, gals! I know I've been pretty quiet here the last few days, but let me explain. I had a bad reaction to some antibiotics and ended up with some severe tummy issues. I've been struggling to eat, and just feeling awful. So yesterday, I called the nurse line and they told me to head to urgent care so I did. I had a few firsts today... first time being pushed in a wheel chair (at least I think), and first time having a cat scan! All in all, we were there for over four hours. Good news was all of my tests looked normal, but I'm being referred to a GI because this isn't the first time I've had severe tummy troubles. They also sent me home with some medicine to help my stomach relax. I was able to get a GI appointment today so hopefully we can start to figure out what's going on. It's just miserable to have most foods make you feel nauseated. It could be a lot of things, but better to get it checked out for sure. So workouts haven't been happening as I've been spending most of my time just trying to stay hydrated and get some food in me- which is what the doctor said I should focus on right now too. I'm still here, but I'm going to lean on all of you here for the next few days as I hopefully get some answers and get this figured out! I thought I would hop on here really quickly and give you an update. And yep my sweatshirt is covered in dog hair, lol!
