I'm 64 and still trying to figure out that first part. But I'm a lot closer than I was 😌. And I have experienced moments of feeling the freedom of being my true self without self-jugment. I think it takes most of us a good part of our lifetime to unravel the messages we've been given from childhood on to finally break through and find ourselves. Of course, it didn't help that I spent decades in active addiction. How blessed I feel to have the roadmap of recovery to help me find my way 🙏. #unstuck #recoveringartfully #healingdoodle 🌻

When I stress, I neglect myself in multiple ways. Skincare is one of the last things on my mind. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been watching @labeautyologist a lot and this #1 tip saves lives + skin. ⁣ ⁣ Don’t Stress. ⁣ ⁣ Severe stress + anxiety started for me in 2015 after high school, right on into college. ⁣ ⁣ Over the past few years, I’ve learned a great deal and I don’t stress or get anxious nearly as much. I don’t believe in medication for resolving these issues, so I never went that route. ⁣ ⁣ What I did do was become a student of all things self-care. I recognized that I have better places to exert my energy than on stressing about things that are out of my control. ⁣ ⁣ Instead, I lean into my self—the study of self. I work on things that I can always improve, like my level of gratitude, improving productivity, and becoming a smarter spender. ⁣ ⁣ Most of my stress + anxiety stems from anything having to do with finances. ⁣ ⁣ I want an emergency fund for my emergency fund + a healthy savings account + debt paid off + capital to fund my (expensive) endeavors. ⁣ ⁣ Financial stability is a steep mountain to climb, but I can further my stride by spending the money I do have in a well-thought out manner. ⁣ ⁣ By doing this, I symbolize to The Universe that’s there’s complete trust on my end of our infinite relationship. How do you stay grateful? I’ve now gotten new perspective on taking my medication. It warmed my heart how many people cared about my transition from on medication to another for my Bipolar Disorder. That was about two weeks ago so I wanted to provide another update and tell you guys why I try to take all of my medication. Last night I realized that there are people in the world with even more severe BD that don’t know they have or or can’t afford to take their medication and that me extremely grateful. I may not like taking it. I certainly do not like what I’m going through right now, but I’ve lived most of my life not knowing and not being on medication and I never want to go through that again. I can’t imagine not being to afford the medication I desperately need and realizing this gave me a new perspective. Abundance is a mindset. So is lack. . We all have patterns of defaulting into looking at the things missing from our lives. As humans we always want and will want more. It comes with the territory of being alive. Desire does not cease. This is why grounding yourself in an understanding of your power will keep you rooted in spite of external things available or not yet within reach. . It’s an intentional choice to redirect your focus on what’s already available to you, big or small. Abundance vs. lack is a real struggle for so many in life. It shows up in our finances, relationships and even our physical health. . This is why defaulting to appreciation will keep you balanced no matter what comes or goes. Where your focus goes, your energy flows. Where energy flows, you ask for more of. . So keep saying, “I don’t like that” or “that’s not fair” and you’ll keep receiving more reasons to proclaim it’s not fair. . Reframe your reaction to, “This is clarifying for me. I may not know how but it is helping me” and in that appreciation of what might initially seem like the opposite of what you want, you transform the current momentum to present itself in the way you want! . As far as we know, nothing ever lasts forever. The universe is subject to the law of impermanence. No experience, no matter how bad, can last forever. Remind yourself of this often. "This too, shall pass." The best way to allow yourself to move on from the inevitability of a passing moment in time is to just accept it for what it is - a passing moment. how I’ve reduced my 𝔸ℕ𝕏𝕀𝔼𝕋𝕐 ⇩ hi, I’m kelly, a type-a, overachiever who feels best when in control. I suffer from high functioning #anxiety . you probably wouldn’t have guessed that when I took this photo I was on the brink of my second anxiety attack in less than 24-hours, #truth . I’ve been there, that sudden drowning feeling, uncontrollable crying or rage, unable to catch my breath, overtaken by darkness and feeling utterly alone. until you’ve experienced it, it’s hard to relate. but now, I can genuinely say that I see the light. I no longer let anxiety CONTROL ME and wanted to share a few things that have helped: 1️⃣ movement. whether it’s my morning gym sesh, the occasional yoga class (spoiler: I can’t focus, go figure 🤷🏼‍♀️) or a quiet Saturday beach walk with bae and bae 🧔🏻🐶 working out is my THERAPY 2️⃣ dedicated quiet time. I start each morning with a cup of coffee and a reading from my women’s devotional bible — maybe religion isn’t your thing, trust me I’m just now reinvesting myself too — but self help and affirmation books work just as well. rather than jump into the chaos of my day I commit the first 30 minutes to positivity, healing and guidance. 3️⃣ practicing gratitude. approaching each day with a grateful heart. even if I still face some obstacles or inner pain I choose to celebrate the good in my life. I’ve made a conscious choice to release negative energy, toxic people and triggers, while celebrating how much I’ve been blessed already. this takes PRACTICE, it’s easy to get sucked into a negative loop, but don’t give up. I work on these things and more every day. I recognize my faults and forgive myself for them. I started caring less if I was being judged and began sharing more of my authentic, weird self. I won’t sugar coat it and pretend like my life is all butterflies and rainbows, but my MOOD and what’s important to me has drastically changed ❤️ . . . . #anxietyrelief #mentalhealth #selfgrowth

If you have an anxious child with a ton of worries, this technique can help them learn to contain their worries to a designated time. ⁣ ⁣ Take any box, and decorate it. On a piece of paper, allow your child to write down as many worries as they can come up with. You can also write down the worries on paper butterfly cut outs. (Explain to your child that worries can often feel like butterflies in our stomachs). Put the ‘worry butterflies’ in the box and put it away in a safe place, maybe under their bed. Keep blank ‘butterflies’ in the box so your child can keep adding their new worries to the box. ⁣ ⁣ Assign 10 minutes every day, for instance before bedtime, for at least 10 days, to take out the worries and talk about them. During those 10 minutes, allow your child to say whatever they want about the worries. ⁣ ⁣ Don’t help them come up with solutions, don’t try to fix it, and don’t interrupt them or make them feel better. Just listen, validate, and empathize. You can say ‘that sounds like a huge worry!’ ‘I can see that’s really worrying you and it must be so hard.’ You can also rephrase and reflect back what they are saying. If they start talking about something else, bring them back. If they run out of worries, ask them to repeat them. ⁣ ⁣ Tell them they are not allowed to talk about their worries at any time apart from Worry Time, and that you won’t answer questions about them before that. If a worry comes up before that, they can add it to the worry box. ⁣ ⁣ It can be helpful to externalise unhelpful, anxious thoughts which can make you feel less weighed down. 🌸Do you wonder if you will ever have love and connection with your partner again?🌸 I used to wonder this all the time and I finally made it through the darkness! Becoming free from anxiety is a process. It’s a journey of courage. It’s continuing to return to the fire with a willingness to sit inside the flames and learn more about yourself. As I mentioned in yesterdays post (if you haven’t checked it out I would go back and read it over) Relationship Anxiety relates to past pain. This pain lives inside of your unconscious mind and is waiting to be rescued and healed. Until this healing happens, the anxiety will remain. As we know from Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) The protective parts of you that employ their defence mechanisms (Intrusive thoughts) won’t let up until the pain they protect is healed. This doesn’t mean you can’t gain some separation from the protective parts and intrusive thoughts, however the thoughts will come up anytime the parts sense that the pain will be triggered. This kind healing takes time and is not a linear process. It is best done with a trained Counsellor or Therapist with knowledge of Relationship Anxiety. The amount of time it takes all depends on the person and how many wounds exist inside. It also depends on the amount of work you commit to putting in and how consistent you are with that work. Anxiety and Panic attacks, A hidden mental health disorder that often goes unnoticed. 😢😢 Most of us suffering from anxiety and panic attacks try to hide it from others especially those not close to us and the public. People may think you are just being ignorant or rude. 😅😅 It can also manifest in physical problems as well. I know when I am super anxious for a period of time I break out in eczema, particularly on my face. Don't let anxiety steal your hopes and dreams. I see this happen almost daily including within my own family. It's heart break to see it and hear what's bothering them. Unfortunately I can't change a thing for them. This change is something they must take action on themselves. There was a time I personally dealt with it myself for about 1.5 years. It took my over at times and many times I didn't even see it coming. Nobody could make it better when it was happening but myself. It took me own self talk and mindfulness practices to calm me down. I personally didn't take any medication for it but I understand some may have to for awhile. It takes time to find the practices to calm your mind down. It takes time to change yourself talk. However I know if you continue to work at you have an excellent chance of conquering your anxiety. Do the work and the results will come. Yes, this work can be a minute by minute battle and you're strong enough to win. Have you heard of autogenics? Developed by a German psychiatrist, it’s a relaxation training technique which anyone can learn — and it’s effective for easing feelings of stress and anxiety. It works by using a series of statements that create feelings of heaviness and warmth in different areas of the body. This has a relaxing effect on the nervous system. Autogenic training is known to reduce the experience of anxiety and help you to feel calm in situations that you might usually find very stressful — such as social events or performances. It becomes more effective the more you practice it. So eventually a simple, single statement could be enough to induce a conditioned state of relaxation at any time.

Think back to that bully in elementary school. All they were looking for was a response out of you. When you don’t react, you win. ⁣ ⁣ Anxiety is a lot like this. It wins if it gets a rise out of you. The less you respond to it, the more control you have. ⁣ ⁣ One of my number one things I keep in mind is that you can’t always control what happens, but you can always choose your response. ⁣ ⁣ Anxiety will sneak up on you, bad days happen, but once you know that you have a choice in how to perceive what is happening, you will learn to free yourself of a lot of this negativity ✨
Judgement. . Judgement of others is the most hurtful and spiteful things. Judging other because they sin differently than you does not elevate you. We have to stop the competition with everyone around us. . Surround yourself with friends and people that don’t gossip and judge others. Use our words to love and help others instead of hurt them. Let’s love like God loves us. . It has taken me a long time to learn this and I am still learning it but it doesn’t matter what other people think of you ask long as you are doing what God wants you to do. So be you. Follow God. Love others. And no judgement ❤️
I run an account called “CHILL Chief” and I had an anxiety attack. . . . I had an amazing time at the beach with friends over the weekend - valuable bonding time. 👯‍♀️ But I didn’t take care of myself in the least — drank far too much, didn’t work out, didn’t meditate for the first time all year, no supplements, bad sleep and ate out every meal. Four days was enough and my body (and brain) noticed. We are all human and I am by no means making excuses to not care for yourself. What I am saying is that this is REAL life and sometimes you prioritize a weekend of shenanigans over your wellness plan. . . . When I got home Sunday, my emotional state was intensely hard to control hopping from anger to sadness to irritation. I tried my best to be mindful of each emotion and look at them from a distance. By Monday the stress and frustration had risen so high that I had an anxiety attack (for the first time in a long time) over a normally manageable issue. Hyperventilating on the floor of my closet (my safe space) with my head tucked between my knees and my dog standing by for comfort. 🐶 . . . The definition of wellness literally states that it is a process of awareness and making healthy decisions. That means that sometimes we move forward and sometimes we move backwards BUT as long as we have an overall forward progression that’s the only thing that matters. This past week I definitely moved backwards but it taught me so much. ✨Remember to not be so hard on yourself and allow yourself to grow and make mistakes. To work through those mistakes and grow even more. I am still in the aftermath of emotional disarray but I’m working through it — now excuse me while I get my sweat on! . . Understanding is one of the keys to ending our fear of fear. When I didn't have the understanding that the fear response was actually trying to keep me safe from danger, I perpetuated the cycle of anxiety by fearing the fear. I genuinely thought that my body was attacking me and so this was one of the reasons why I kept myself in this self-created cycle. It wasn't until I listened to someone a lot smarter than me telling me that my body wasn't breaking down or eating itself to death. I received some DMs from someone who shared about a painful traumatic experience and asked for a post about healing from trauma.⠀ ⠀ A tiny square on Instagram is not NEARLY sufficient for addressing trauma (and nothing I provide on Instagram constitutes psychotherapy in any way, shape, or form), but it’s at least a place to put a few ideas out there.⠀ ⠀ Recovering from trauma is a messy process, but it IS possible. While you probably won’t forget what has happened to you, with time and support you can learn to understand your experience as one piece of your story and not the whole book.⠀ ⠀ Before any provider EVER asks you to describe what you went through, it is imperative that they first make sure you’re safe and stable. Jumping in too quickly can be re-traumatizing. “Safe and stable” means⠀ ⠀ ✅You’re not in immediate danger of having the trauma happen again⠀ ✅You have a place to go where you feel safe ⠀ ✅You have skills for calming yourself when you get upset, overwhelmed, or triggered (like knowing how to take slow deep breaths and use tools for grounding and self-soothing)⠀ ⠀ Anyone helping you work through trauma should always be willing to go at your pace and take a break or stop completely if you get too activated. They should never force you to share details before you’re ready. ⠀ ⠀ The biggest way to start the healing process is to seek the services of a trained trauma professional (a psychologist, social worker or therapist).⠀ ⠀ That’s not an option for everyone, so if you cannot access mental healthcare, I recommend completing the PTSD Workbook by Mary Beth Williams and Soili Poijula. It’s not a replacement for face-to-face care, but it’s a great start.⠀ ⠀ To learn coping in times of high stress (whether it’s trauma related or not), check out some of my previous posts. I give lots of step by step guidance on using various skills for grounding and calming yourself. ⠀ ⠀ If you or someone you know has experienced a trauma, please try to seek help outside of Instagram.
