There is a vocal hate for Carol Danvers “Carl Manvers” on social media. CaptCummings, Diversity & Comics, etc. are all ultra conservative comicbook YouTubers that scream “SJW Marvel” all the time. These are the same people who complain about Star Wars. But there is a underlining difference between the two fandoms.
The MCU fanbase has always been a lot more diverse because it was a global phenomenon.
The gender ratio for MCU movies is split in half 55%-45% for the most part. 70% of non-white people made up the domestic box office of Black Panther OW. This is why Marvel doesn’t get as much shit for their diversity as Star Wars. Cuz’ like it or not, Star Wars has always been overwhelmingly white male when it comes to box office and merchandise. They usually take up 60-70% of the box office, even with Rey/Finn/Rose as leads. It makes sense that they are more vocal about the inclusion in the new trilogy.
Marvel Studios was once predominately white male demographics back when the first Iron Man came out in 2008. For Phase 1, it was just that like Star Wars. But with the inclusion of Falcon, Gamora, Black Widow, Black Panther, etc. minorities and women payed to see themselves represented in Phase 2 AND especially in Phase 3 as seen by Black Panther. This doesn’t translate to Star Wars because majority of their money relies on nostalgia from the older generation which was... mainly white males. Marvel built their fanbase with inclusion from the 21st century.
The biggest fear I have is that this will be another TLJ backlash solely based on her OP powers, even though Feige made it clear that she will counterbalance that with her internal flaws. I’m sure that if Doctor Strange was a woman in his own film & Infinity War, these people would be screaming “SJW MARY SUE”.
He managed to last the longest against Thanos, developed all of his powers off screen, had more screentime than most of the OG Avengers, & is the reason they succeed. He also got one film prior to his team up... like Captain Marvel.
I just hope the fandom appreciates her and gives Brie admiration and love.
But I have a feeling things are going to turn ugly.
