Light Kettlebell Strengthening Exercises - aiming to bring your toes towards your knees* - Dorsiflexion. - 2. TIbialis Anterior - Reverse Calf Raises, aiming for 20-25 reps. - 3. ​ Before physical therapy, my activities were determined by how I felt, and most often I had to curtail what I wanted to do because my hips hurt so badly. I spent a lot of time resting and was unable to lie on my right side because of neck pain from an old, untreated injury. Now I begin and end my day on my right side, very comfortably. I rarely rest during the day and enjoy exercise classes as well as my personal “maintenance” program. Physical Therapy has taught me what I need to do to care for myself. I have print – outs of all the exercises that are suitable for me to do so that I’m in charge of my own wellbeing. I can’t thank Advantage Physical Therapy enough for sharing their knowledge, compassion, and encouragement.

I got hit in the ankle with a baseball Friday night. It swelled up huge, so at least it’s not swollen anymore!
Boy does it hurt, and I’m not allowed to run, yet. My mind was totally ready to get back to work but the universe has other plans. Saw the doctor today to get my clearance to go to work today, unfortunately he told me NOPE and I have to wait to be re-evaluated next Monday, after the staples come out. I need to be easy on myself and be patient with the healing process (surgery was just on Thursday). Surgeon changed the bandages and what colors/bruising on my ankle!! Xrays looked great and he is happy with my progress. I am the one who just wants to get my life back to normal. This is a very real post for me, I try to keep that smile on and only post the good things but this is life. My mum cup is being filled by this sweet little soul tonight. Sleepy cuddles and whispering ‘I love you mummy’ as he snuggled in after late night toilet time. It was exactly what I needed. Right now, I’m feeling tired and emotionally drained. The last few weeks of sickness have taken its toll on my body and my training and I know I’m still not 100%. I desperately want to be and the frustration that my body needs time to recoup is irritating. I feel flat. And so, have decided that this next week or so I am taking some time to find my groove with training again and refocus on my why. Why I am doing Ironman. Why am I doing triathlon at all. I feel like Instagram right now, is adding extra stress to my life in amongst mum life and uni. I started my insta to share the ups and down of mum life and training, to bring awareness and start conversation about mental health, to promote women of all ages and abilities doing sport - because let’s face it I’m an average athlete at best and if I can do it anyone can! And to document my journey from an ankle reconstruction to (now) Ironman. But part of my journey is to have time off. Time away from my phone to hang out with these amazing kids that I have.:. It started in HS, continued in college, and ramped up when I did a specialized residency with USC in sports physical therapy. I’ve been fortunate to cover high school, college, WNBA, the DREW League, and pre-draft NBA workouts. When I cover basketball, sometimes there isn’t much to do. Other times I’m putting athletes through warmups, activation drills, or cool-down drills. Unfortunately, injuries do occur and sometime I have to respond to a dislocated knee or ankle sprain for example. So, in August 2018, I accidentally banged my ankle on the coffee table. I saw urgent care 2 weeks later because it wouldn't stop hurting and my mom was worried that I cracked it. They said everything's normal. Then, I saw my primary doctor and she referred me to a podiatrist who took x-rays and did an exam and said I most likely damaged the deltoid ligament which is a small triangular ligament by the ankle. Everything had swollen and shifted to the left. I wore an ankle stabilizer for 8 weeks as directed and she said everything appeared fine and to discontinue the brace. Now, for the past 2 months or so, my ankle and foot keeps swelling and getting more and more painful. I keep trying to get in to see someone but everyone has been booked up. I wanted to see an orthopedic doctor instead of a podiatrist to see if there is an occult fracture. Crossover hop testing - detecting issues in athletes ⁣ ⁣ Assessing dynamic neuromuscular control is important for athletes participating in running/jumping/impact sports.⁣ ⁣ If single leg hopping isn't showing any impairments, crossover hopping is where I go next. ⁣ ⁣ As a review of what we're looking for: is the knee collapsing inwards during landing? Cause a collapse of >8° beyond the norm can predict the likelihood of experiencing an ACL injury (Hewett et al, 2005).⁣ ⁣ How quiet is the landing? Quieter landings require greater motor control and directly translate to a significant reduction of compressive force at the knee - your quietest landing can reduce the compression force at the knee by almost 40% vs a loud landing (Verniba et al, 2017).⁣ ⁣ And lastly distance: if a triple crossover hop distance on the injured leg is <90% vs the uninjured leg - your chance of an ACL injury is about 4x more likely (Kyritsis et al, 2016).⁣ ⁣ If there is recurring knee pain despite consistent self-maintenance and your hopping hasn't been analyzed or trained - you need to explore that next. Single leg hopping forwards looks solid? So yesterday evening walking from the apartment office back to my apartment I stepped down off the curb and apparently I stepped down wrong. I felt a crack/snap feeling of something splitting and then the two sides receding and bad pain. Made it back to my apartment putting as much weight as I could on my walker and then Motrin, iced and elevated it(first pic). I was hoping it would feel better today but it’s really unstable wobbly and hurts so I pulled out a old brace from the last time I sprained my ankle(second pic) , and thankfully it’s keeping it stable when I walk and pain is minimal while in the brace so far, I’m sure the more I’m up on it it will get hurting even more. I’ve always sprained my ankles and wrists very easily, not really sure why, I just know that I do. I’m praying this is just a sprain, I would guess from the amount of pain that it’s just a sprain but what make me nervous is I very clearly felt something snap and the sides of it receding up and down, I’m assuming it was some type of soft tissue thing but yeah I’m obviously not sure. I do know if I fractured or broke anything it would be worse pain even with my high pain tolerance. If it continues then Monday I’ll call my primary dr and see if I can get in to see her. It’s just a minor bump in the road so I’m not upset or even frustrated. I just wish I understood why I sprain so easily. One of many questions I have.

I haven’t been sleeping well, and I’ve generally been feeling a bit low. Not having full mobility and no transport means I feel like I’ve been a bit stuck in the flat and in my head. Plus I’ve only got one pal here (lol) cos I haven’t had a chance to make any friends. I hadn’t started work before I fell down the stairs 🤷🏼‍♀️ I went through a period of meditating daily after I came back from Sri Lanka a few years ago and I loved it, it made me feel so calm but it’s slipped out of my routine in the way things do when other stuff takes priority. So I’m trying to re-incorporate that and a modified yoga routine (cos of the ankle) into my life again. I’m starting it slow, just 5 or 10 minutes a few times a week and I’ll slowly build it up. It’s difficult making new routines and habits, but I know that it’ll be good for my mental health and that’s important. • Meditation is known to🧘‍♀️reduce anxiety 🧘‍♀️relieve stress 🧘‍♀️enhance self awareness 🧘‍♀️increase our attention span and 🧘‍♀️reduce age-related memory loss. For something so simple, and easy to do, just exchange those 20 mins you spend aimlessly scrolling or on your commute to practice being mindful and it might just change your outlook and your perspective. There are a bunch of free apps you can use, or the way I try to get back into it is counting my breath. In for 3 and out for 5, or 5 and 7 if you nail 3 and 5. Anyway, give it a go! Google it. It's not easy coming back from an injury, but it's also not impossible. ⠀ My ankle still bothers me every damn day...way more than it should...but I'm not going to let that get in the way of doing what I love anymore. ⠀ It's been one of my greatest limitations for more than a year now for two reasons. 1) It friggin hurts 😂 but more importantly, 2) It scares me. ⠀ I love the gym, I love to run, hike, snowboard, spend all day adventuring....and I have been saying I can't because I'm scared...scared to take the chance in case I realize I can no longer do what I love...that's especially true with snowboarding. ⠀ But a friend finally got me out rock climbing the other day...something else I was scared to take a chance on...and to my surprise the pain in my ankle was more manageable than I anticipated. ⠀ Which brings me to this...don't let your fears get in the way of living the life you want. And that goes for anything. If you don't take the chance you will never know. And who wants to live their life with a "what if" anyways?!? Take a leap...embrace new opportunity...take that job offer...tell that special someone you love em'...
