As the world's largest bird—it can stand up to 9 feet tall and weigh 280 pounds—the ostrich (Struthio camelus) is also one of the most adaptable. This flightless bird lives in a variety of environments in southwest Africa and has developed a complex social structure. An ostrich will attack only if threatened, and then it can kick hard enough to kill a lion. To lure intruders from a nest, a male will perform a "distraction display" while the well-camouflaged chicks run for cover. You can see a protective ostrich hovering over its eggs to scare away approaching warthogs in one of the dioramas in the Museum’s Akeley Hall of African Mammals.
HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY to this super special doggo of mine!
The past two years have been a whirlwind! Apollo was my first dog neuter that I did solo and I thought I had ruined him when his scrotum swelled up after the surgery 😭😭 Then he was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia at 10 months old. I was told that one hip was worse than the other, and that we should do surgery on the left and hope that the right one holds up over time. It was a preventative triple pelvic osteotomy, an old school procedure with mixed reviews. At the end of the day, I chose to trust the orthopedic surgeon at UGA and trust myself and elected to do the surgery. I am so glad I did. The recovery was brutal. I was mostly alone, carrying my 60 lb dog up and down the stairs 4 times a day to potty. Time will tell if he will need a total hip replacement, but I know I will bend over backwards to make sure he is not in pain.
Fast forward to this November when he overdosed on ibuprofen. I have never felt more guilty about anything in my entire life. It was the worst feeling... knowing that my stupidity of leaving the Advil bottle on my nightstand led to my dog stuck in the hospital for four days. Again, the UGA veterinary team showed me how important the work we do is. They saved his life. He was going into renal failure and they SAVED my dog.
I always thought that I wanted to work with exotics, but after having a dog my mindset has shifted. He is my best friend. He is always there for me when I am sad or lonely. I am his life. I don’t have kids, and I don’t know when I will have a family. All I know is right now, it is just me and my dog. Maybe for the last time ever in my life it will just be me and a dog. Our relationship is one of the most amazing things I have experienced. I have never felt such security in his unconditional love. So I guess that’s why veterinarians exist. Not just for food animals, but for people like me who view their dog as family.
Tell me about you and your pet in the comments ❤️ I would love to get to know all of you!
In The Garden
In the garden we once lived
Where God and man together dwelt
A life we had in liberation
And shame from nakedness we never felt
Trees you've seen never so beautiful
Abundant with fruit so magnificent
With each memory of that place
I realize the garden was truly heaven-sent
To every animal I gave its name
And none sought the other's blood
The lion ate grass and lied with the ox
Proof of instinctive love
But about the garden this I miss most
Not the peace with nature we all had
But the time with my Heavenly Father
For with Him our hearts were never sad. ~ B. Maurice
