ABBA - Mama Mia (1975) 9/10.
The work of pure genius. The band may have come out of Eurovision but as soon as they were a household name, that was quickly forgotten - it feels like they have been in the mainstream forever, and that’s where they belong. Mama Mia is a classic for me, and assume much of the music loving public. Instantly recognisable due to the piano (actually a marimba) at the start, it quickly drops into the verse, so catchy (the ladies solo on the verse) it is irresistible.
A few tasteful guitar licks, a chorus for the ages and if you’re watching the video, some very strange jumpsuits - they dress weird in 70s Sweden. Benny almost has a knowing glint in his eye “I just wrote one of the greatest songs of the 70s”. Such a good song is this, it’s probably been covered for a million different styles - seems like it would suit a punk rehash!
