The smoking of herbs has been used since ancient times as a form of detoxification. In Ayurveda and in Rainforest Tribal cultures, snuffing and smoking herbs has been used as a nasal decongestant, for physical and spiritual reasons. In Ayurveda for example, smoking of herbs is sometimes prescribed after detox therapies, such as pancha karma, to burn residual toxins from the system. Herbs may also be used in the place of tobacco to help stop smoking. Curanderos also prescribe particular snuffs (like rapé) and smoking blends, to decongest during particular colds and throat pain. Giving an immediate action on the nerves and may help clear the mind by relaxing proprieties from some of the herbs. Classic herbs in both kinds of traditions are: ajwan, bayberry, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cubebs, black pepper + ginger (for pungent expectorant purposes only) and special rejuvenatives like calamus, damiana and gotu kola. Blue lotus is another classic that Egyptians used Blue Lotus a nervine and to help calm the mind before meditation. Native American traditions used herbs like Indian warrior (pedicularlis family) and skullcap during ceremonial rituals. .
