As it's #freshersweek
I thought I'd share a photo of my student card, even though it was actually from my final year. Check out those sideburns 😍 I remember using this discount card when I was buying my first (and, to date, last) pair of white jeans! 🕺 *Serious bit*
I'd love to go back and relive those #student
days, but that's not because I had a great time at the University of Ulster #Coleraine
, in fact, it was the opposite. The first year especially was the lowest point of my life. I was shy, lonely, and most probably depressed, if I'd known that that was an actual thing you could be diagnosed with. The best part of the week was coming home to Banbridge on the weekend to see my friends and family. Big up the Friday night Coach posse 👊
But that's not to say my four years in #UUC
were all bad. I had some great nights out, fell in love with the north coast, am proud to be the first Hassard family member to attend and graduate university, and there are still a handful of Uni mates that I'm in contact with. However, by the time final year came around, I couldn't wait to finish and move to Belfast.
I'm not usually one for looking back, but if I could know what I know now, those are the years that I'd choose to go back and do again. Or at least go back and tell that young fella with the full head of hair and amazing sideburns that everything is going to be ok; that there are some lovely, creative people out there if he just looks for them; that he doesn't need to stay in the library until closing time; that the girls may actually want to talk to him; that the bullies will eventually get kicked out or fail their course; that those friends who got him through the dark days will still be his friends in 2018; and, perhaps most importantly, to throw out the white jeans before anyone takes a photograph of him wearing them.
