"I believe that the only way to save humanity is for people of all races to work together." - Frank Fools Crow.
Fools Crow, one of the greatest American leaders of all time, was always clear about this point. His vision of humanity uniting around that which is sacred inspires us today to come together around water, the planet, and the health and well-being of every human, as well as the health and well-being of all life. It is a vision that can never be killed, and will always inspire people to take the moral high ground. The tenacity of this vision through every chapter in the unspeakably brutal history of the Lakota people (which I have learned much about from the books by Fools Crow and Thomas E. Mails), is part of what inspired the song #heartbeat
, expressed particularly in these lines: "Even after years and centuries of treaties proven hollow / Wounded Knee and DAPL / See the Sioux uphold laws you don't follow"
It has been inspiring to see this spirit and vision so alive at the Indigenous People's March (#IMPDC19
) as well as the Women's March (#WomensMarch2019
). It is an experience I will cherish and hope to bring with me into this year and the work I am trusted to do in this lifetime.
