Many of you will have seen the BBC article (Short bursts of intense exercise 'better for weight loss' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-47242940) over the weekend stating that short bursts of high intensity exercise were better for weight loss
First thing to note is that it is incredibly summarised and there are very few details about the individuals, the exercises carried out, the duration of the workouts and the calorie intakes so drawing any meaningful conclusions from the article alone is pretty much impossible! 🙈
However, the comparison is nothing new, and I believe there are merits to both, subject to circumstances and goals. What the study also doesn’t mention is that the best way to burn fat is to build muscle! 💪🏼
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is a great way for the time poor to ensure that they are getting a good bout of exercise during their day! 🕰
BUT, that intense nature of the sessions can make it unrealistic for some to achieve, which could, in turn, result in them being totally demotivated about their fitness journey and maybe even give up completely, which is the LAST thing we want! 🙉
LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) cardio is much less intensive and can be very useful in a number of circumstances 🚶🏽♂️🚶🏼♀️
For those with very little exercise experience, simply moving more, even if at a steady consistent pace, is going to be hugely beneficial 🙌🏼
And, if you are following a weight training program, you want your recovery to be focused towards repairing and rebuilding those damaged muscle fibres. LISS is much less taxing on your Central Nervous System (CNS) so your body can direct its attention to those muscle fibres that require it!
LISS is typically going to require a longer period of time, and ideally at a separate time of day to the weight sessions, which is why it may not be for everyone!
Another consideration should be enjoyment and sustainability! Which are you more likely to continue with over time as that consistency is going to be vital for long term progress!?
I often catch myself saying, “I can’t do that...”. You may do this too. I am here to tell you that you can do anything you damn well please. It’s not “I can’t do that” it’s really “who am I to be that...”. We put ourselves down and think that we are not good enough to be living our best lives. One of the distinct features of Wing Chun kung fu will be their horse stance "二字拑羊馬" . It loosely translates to Character Two, Clamping Goat horse stance. I know what you are thinking, it sounds and look very strange.
You are probably wondering why is it called a horse stance. A horse stance has nothing to do with a horse, but it was a way to admire the horse's ability to eat and sleep while standing through out the day and night. If they want deep sleep they do lay down. It was an expression for Chinese Martial artists. If you want to build strong foundation and legs, you have train like a horse.
Going back to the purpose of the Wing Chun horse stance. In modern language, what you are doing is widening your base, lowering your center of gravity and rooting your foot the floor.
The horse stance is not a fighting stance. It's main objective is to strengthen the lower body through isometric contraction at the same time teaching the practitioner proper alignment, balance and relaxation (upper body).
You will then wonder why the triangle stance? In the Wing Chun system our goal is to achieve balance. Therefore, our body weight is focused on our heels as our body will have better alignment and support from the ground.
If you are having the toes pointing in, even though it looks like a triangle, it is wrong. Just having the toes moving inward, you will shift your body weight forward, meaning you will loose balance. It is the same principle with a squat. Your bodyweight distribution will be on the heels as you are squatting.
To make a stronger stance, we will push the heels out, this will allow us to be in an upright position while we lower our center mass. By forcing the heels out, we are essentially drilling or grinding the foot into the ground to create better stability. The toes pointing inwards is the effect by pushing the heels out. Likewise you will be doing a pigeon feet stance than actual horse stance.
Ok let’s talk thieves products!
We all know how concentrated the amazing thieves household cleaner is... only one capful in a 16oz spray bottle, but did you know that you can dilute other thieves products too?
I dilute the thieves hand soap and dish soap to a 1:2 soap to water ratio. I pour out 2/3 into an old bottle and fill the rest up with water. It is just as effective and beneficial and makes it that much cheaper! (Doing this also makes the dish soap more sudsy!)
I have also found a way to make the thieves laundry soap last for 320 loads at just 5 cents a load!!!
Here is the recipe:
2.5 gallon glass jar with spicket
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup thieves household cleaner
1 cup thieves laundry soap
30-50 drops essential oil of choice
(Use 1/4 cup per load)

The full moon reminds us to look up and recognize the light in the dark. Virgo beacons the healer in us to sift through the nutrient rich soil of our lives. The sun in Pisces illuminates the belief that all the pieces of us make us whole. This super full moon is Virgo is a calling home to our fullness, our richness and the healer within that can alchemize through water and earth all the facets of our being.
This is a powerful grounding week to recognize the healing that needs to happen within and also to recognize that by healing ourselves, we in-turn heal each other. Pisces and Virgo are mutable signs that allow the change of seasons as well shifting the tides of our lives revealing the multitude of paths that are ours to choose from.
