The Home Guard consisted of mostly men too old, or boys too young for military deployment. Their job included, but was not limited to, shooting down approaching enemy bombers in a bid to defend their cities.

The Marder III tank had the chassis of a Panzer equipped with a powerful '7.5 cm PaK 40' anti-tank gun. They allowed for high fire-power but offered little protection to the crew inside.

Operation Market Garden was an Allied attempt to secure 9 bridges which would give them sufficient transport routes to Germany. The operation was ultimately a failure, the British losing 8000 paratroopers in the process.
