The Commuter (2018)
Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra
Starring: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth McGovern, Jonathan Banks and Sam Neill
Review: I’ve been a fan of Liam Neeson’s collaborations with Jaume Collet-Serra. They’re action-thriller movies that aren’t trying to be the best, but perfectly fine watches. It’s fair to say I got exactly what I expected with The Commuter. This movie was just plain and simple; it didn’t add anything special but it didn’t need to as long as it was self-aware. Liam Neeson has provided a couple of solid action hits ever since “Taken” and to see him back with Collet-Serra was enough to get me to watch this one. This time around, Neeson is playing a normal commuter who works 9-5 and is placed in some sort of conspiracy on his way home. I think it’s safe to say that Neeson’s character obviously has an action background, but it was nice to see him play a standard guy wrapped up in a situation. He’s also still capable of kicking ass because there were some pretty good fight scenes in this movie. I also liked Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, but the former had such a short amount of screen time. I was expecting more from her character especially with how high she was billed. I also generally like Patrick Wilson so it was nice to see him appear, as well as Sam Neill. The thing that I like about Collet-Serra’s movies is that they don’t feel the same. They all have their distinct style, especially after collaborating with Neeson four times. I was worried this was going to be really similar to “Non-Stop” but the way some scenes were shot and even the mystery elements felt different enough from his other movies. This movie also kept me guessing which is major props because usually there’s a point where the mystery becomes pretty blatantly obvious but I genuinely kept my eyes and ears open for any clues. Although the ending all just kind of happened and it hit predictable beats for the movie to end on. In the end, The Commuter gave me what I wanted, which was a standard action-thriller that does a good job at getting the audience engaged and following the mystery along with our protagonist.
Such a cutieeeejdjddj😍😍😍

I hope that one day you will read this message ❤️ - Pauline #verafarmiga @verafarmiga

The Front Runner was directed by Jason Reitman (‘Thank You For Smoking’, ‘Juno’), and tells the story of Gary Hart’s presidential campaign in 1988 which took a disastrous turn, all captured in the book from which the film is based, “All The Truth Is Out” by Matt Bai.
The film does take a little time to settle and for the plot to establish exactly what is going on and who is who, but once the film is in full swing it’s a captivating watch. Hugh Jackman is terrific, but then when is he not? His charisma and confidence shine through. J.K. Simmons is once again at his snappy best as campaign manager Bill Dixon, but feels under-utilised. In fact many of the side-characters feel underdeveloped, making it difficult to really feel invested in them and their role within the film. We would’ve liked to have seen more from Vera Farmiga (‘The Conjuring’ film series) also, who takes on the role of Hart’s wife Lee.
The screenplay almost feels like it’s split in half; the first showing Hart and his sensational rise in popularity, gathering momentum, the second almost a polar opposite, as the media frenzy brings the campaign to its knees, not only affecting Hart’s wife and daughter but also his aides and campaign volunteers; the family and lady involved in the affair in particular smothered by the claustrophobic feeling of constant media attention.
The Front Runner is probably not as riveting as Reitman believes it to be, but serves as a thought-provoking and an intriguing foray into the world of American politics, particularly for those that have no prior knowledge of the presidential campaign system nor the history of this remarkable series of events.
