Today let’s talk about the Ukrainian Mark Padun, Bahrain Merida 22 years old (6th July 1996, Donetsk), specialized in the hilly one day races and in the short stage races, he is also a strong baroudeur.
Born in Ukraine but grown in Italian teams (Palazzago, first team of Fabio Aru and Team Colpack), in 2015, first year as a Under 23, he won a stage and the kom jersey at Giro del Friuli, he also did an 8th in the Course de la Paix U23, important short stage race for the category; in 2016 he won the national U23 ITT Championship and a stage in Giro della Valle d’Aosta, important U23 stage race, closed in 3rd place in the GC, after Kilian Frankiny and Enric Mas (2nd in Vuelta 2018); in 2017 he won the Trofeo Piva, important U23 one day race, won by riders like Geoghegan, McCarthy, Pasqualon (with Michael Matthews second) and the Mark’s conational Yaroslav Popovych (winner of Volta a Catalunya, a stage in Tour de France and 3rd in Giro d’Italia 2003), he also won the GC of Fleche du Sud and a stage in Giro d’Italia Under 23 (second most important stage race for the U23), closed in 5th place. In 2018 he joined the Vincenzo Nibali’s team and he did his first pro victory: the final stage of Tour of the Alps in Innsbruck, with a great finisseur’s action in front of Bennett, Hirt, Ciccone, O’Connor, Pinot, Lopez and Froome; he also did a 3rd place in the 12th stage of Vuelta a Espana, thanks to a breakaway. At the end of the season he finished 5th in the Under 23 Road Race of the World Championships in Innsbruck.
