Happy seventh birthday to my hero, to the little boy to whom doctors told us to give up on and to just “allow nature to take its course (we of course refused to do so),” to the strong little guy who was born healthy but at just five days old weighing only 3lbs 16oz caught meningitis which changed his life forever, however you’ll never see him in a bad mood. Tristan was born completely neuro-typical at 30 weeks, he was incredibly healthy and he was about to be discharged from the NICU, however our lives were changed forever five short days after his date of birth. He caught meningitis and it caused extra cerebral spinal fluid (hydrocephalus) to build up on his peri ventricles causing Peri-Ventricular Leukomalcia. The cerebral spinal fluid caused deterioration to most of his brain including his cerebellum which caused him to have Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy (he isn’t able to use his limbs voluntarily.) It damaged the majority of his grey and white matter as well and the damage stopped short of his brain stem which is what kept him alive by the grace of God. It damaged his cortical vision causing him to be visually impaired and only able to see light and shadows. He has seizure disorder and high muscle tone as well. The doctors gave him a month to live if even. They said that he had the worst amount of damage that they had ever seen and they told us to give up. However, we weren’t willing to and neither was Tristan! At only 3lbs and 16oz Tristan started fighting for his life and he fought hard! He started doing things that were deemed impossible for somebody in his condition. His father and I started researching about the brain and treatments. Doctors told us that we were in over our heads, but we didn’t care. We found treatments such as Stem Cells and HBOT, we then traveled around the country, staying in hotels for months at a time to get him these cutting edge treatments, to which saved his life. He went a year and a half without having a seizure after his first round of treatments, which was immaculate for him, considering he was having over 100 twitches a day before hand. Tristan turned seven today, so remember if the same 3lb 16oz baby that expert..
