So here’s the next queer hero, Mikel F. Haman, wearing the colors of the flag of Suriname. Mikel was a Surinamese man who lived in Amsterdam and was known for his activism. He was the founder of LGBTQ organization Survibes and was the one who started ‘Roze Zondag’ (Pink Sunday) @kwakufestival.
In 2009 he organized a Surinamese/Caribbean boat for the Amsterdam Canal Parade named...Pirates of the Caribbean! He was Captain Mikel Haman. In 2017 Mikel asked Dutch and Surinamese celebrities to record a music video for the song ‘Kom uit de kast’ which literally means ‘Come out of the closet’. The video was meant to show solidarity with Surinamese LGBTQ+. And this is only a small part of all that he’s done as an activist. Sadly Mikel became very ill and died on January 5th 2018. He was 54 years old.
