8 MORE DAYS to raise awareness with the help of @runtastic @adidasrunning #fortheoceans 💦💙 When #oceanmonth is over soon, we need to continue riding this wave to save the oceans! DO. YOUR. PART. #strongertogether cc: @parley.tv START. TODAY!
When he first moved to Washington state, Russ Lewis wasn't sure about his wife's habit of cleaning up litter during their daily beach walk. Six years and 957 cleanups later, he's thinking differently. To celebrate #30DaysofOcean , we are highlighting eight people who inspire us to protect our blue planet. Ranging in age from eight to 73, these ocean heroes share not only a passion for the ocean, but also a commitment to taking action. These ocean heroes are leading the push for a plastic straw-free Santa Barbara — and most aren't even 10 yet. Adams Elementary School third- through sixth-grade students take their love for the ocean far beyond their classroom walls. Students at this low-income school in Santa Barbara serve as NOAA Ocean Guardian Ambassadors, engaging in hands-on ocean science as well as teaching others about the ocean issues affecting their community. Recently, these ocean heroes have focused their efforts on reducing single-use plastic consumption locally. They are currently working alongside the Community Environmental Council and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper on a campaign to encourage restaurants city-wide to provide straws only if customers actively request one. The Ocean Ambassador team spoke before the Santa Barbara City Council to ask for their support in this endeavor, where Valentina T. told the council that “We should join other cities like Santa Cruz and Malibu to set the example for being the solution to ending plastic pollution.” To celebrate #30DaysofOcean , we are highlighting eight people who inspire us to protect our blue planet. The impacts of ocean and coastal acidification have the potential to be felt throughout our entire world —and a whole world’s worth of people are needed to respond. Individuals from every sector and professional background are involved, and contribute different perspectives to the table…except, wait a second; where’s the table? Enter the Ocean Acidification Information Exchange; an online community that bridges its members’ disciplines and geographic boundaries to create a place where it’s easy to ask questions, find answers and trade resources with others in the field. Since launching in February, the Exchange has grown to more than 500 community members from 23 States and 13 countries. The Exchange’s users are sharing what they’ve learned from mistakes, asking for feedback on papers and videos, bringing in citizen scientists and attending events hosted by fellow community members. The OA Info Exchange operates on the premise that knowledge is power, and sharing knowledge is the best way to guarantee that communities, regardless of their location, will be prepared for ocean and coastal acidification. #oceanacidifcation #coastalacidification #oceanmonth #workingtogether #adaptationinaction ##knowledgeispower
Plastic isn't all bad. It's our relationship with it that needs adjustment. #nosingleuseplastic #yellow #OceanMonth
This starfish is one to look at, but not touch. The upper surface is covered with nasty spines. There are toxic chemicals in the spines, and once you are stuck, it will hurt, and continue to hurt for hours if not days. Such evidence to support it is that unusually heavy rainstorms wash nutrients from the land into the water, which feed the tiny plants and animals that are the food of the young starfish, so more juveniles survive and they grow up into the invading hordes of coral-killers. From this viewpoint it makes sense to reduce the amount of soil, piggery sewage, and high phosphate laundry detergents that flush down our streams into the ocean. These nutrients might help more crown-of-thorn juveniles survive and grow up to eat our corals. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101 #IYOR2018 #OceanMonth

#Oceanmonth Each day we learn more about if & how marine life & ecosystems that we know & love will respond to changing ocean chemistry. What have we learned? Likely some species may not fare so well, others will adapt and some will thrive. Foodwebs are one way to see how species are connected to one another. Scientists model #foodwebs to understand how #ecosystems & the services they provide will change to help guide how we adapt to and mitigate projected changes. https://go.usa.gov/xQFcA #ourchangingocean #ourocean #oceanlove #adaptationinaction

How many species live in the ocean? Given the vast size of the ocean, it is impossible to know the exact number of species that live there. Research suggests, however, that the number of species in the ocean is decreasing. The continued decline in the health of many ecosystems, coupled with rising extinction rates, are likely outpacing species’ ability to evolve to tolerate the conditions of our rapidly changing planet. It is not all bad news, though. Researchers around the world continue to study marine life and habitats to help develop new strategies to preserve vital ocean ecosystems. Scientists estimate that 91 percent of ocean species have yet to be classified, and that 95 percent of the ocean remains unexplored. While these statistics may sound daunting, they have not stopped the global scientific community from striving to amass as much knowledge as possible about ocean life. Today (and every day) we celebrate #ourocean and those who are connected to it- whether working to understand, making their livelihood on, or simply inspired by it! What can we say ‘thank you’ to our ocean for today? • The oxygen we breathe, some estimates say 70% of the oxygen in our atmosphere is provided by marine plants! • Acting as the climate’s heart-- Just as our hearts circulate blood & regulate the body’s temperature, our ocean controls the circulation of heat and moisture throughout the climate system. • Supporting incredible marine life and ecosystems that sustain communities by providing sustenance, recreation, and a role in culture and connection around the globe! Happy #WorldOceansDay ! #30DaysofOcean #oceanmonth

One of #EcoArtFestival2018 artists, Andie Lau, mesmerized everyone with her masterpiece. 🎨 She described her mural as: "Hope Within a Deadly Sea." This mural displays a message of hope. The hooded figure represents mankind; who is responsible for the pitiful state of the ocean is in. The skulls are painted by the artist's ten year old students, who symbolise the hopefulness of a future generation whose hands determine the fate and regeneration of the ocean. 🌊💚 View the rest of the murals here: https://www.ecohotels.com.ph/eco-art-festival-2018-brushing-off-mental-illness-stigma-music-arts/ . . . #ecoart #whenpaintingsaysitall #ecohotelph #containersbyecohotel #mentalhealthawareness #oceanmonth #artfestival #refuge #wowpinas #tagaytayfinds #whenintagaytay #skulls #hope #mexican #rebirth

In celebration of the ‘#OceanMonth ’, here’s a selfie I took of me and this local back when we returned to Apo Reef in 2014, years after we first visited this atoll. The total ban on fishing inside this marine sanctuary allowed the reef to flourish and recover, increasing the population of marine wildlife and the different species of fish that thrive in the area. This created a spill-over effect improving the harvests of fishermen in the neighbouring fishing villages outside the sanctuary reaching as far as Palawan and Mindoro Oriental. This very curious green sea turtle, however, swam towards me while we were filming as if wanting to involve itself with whats going on in its grazing area. I gladly obliged. #aporeef #onassignment #oceanmonth #saveourseas #gopro #gopole #60feetunderwater

Just received my reusable bamboo straws with pouches from Movement Against Plastic Pollution-ilocosnorte. The hubby and I consume lots of iced drinks which we purchase via drive thru or take out. And I have watched or read many materials warning us about the use of plastic and how everything end up in our oceans and harm marine life. I have been looking for reusable straws which we can use and take along with us anywhere we go. Finally found someone selling them and for a good cause too. So for those like me who: 1. Love iced drinks, shakes and frappes 2. Only have the time for take out or drive thru orders. 3. Feel guilty about using plastic straws (because its hard to drink milk tea or iced coffee without straws) you can DM or PM me and ill give you the details of where you can order the bamboo straws. Or you can visit their facebook page: www.facebook.com/mappPhilippines. They come with a pouch and guidelines on how to clean and care for them too. So lets start and #skipthestraw and say #notoplastic everytime. Finally. kudos to the people behind the project. #refusesingleuseplastic #savetheoceans 🌊 #oceanmonth
