Dan John once modified this quote to apply to our industry. “The coach that trains himself has a fool for a client.” ☝️ Today I hit a sumo deadlift PR, only to follow it up with an idea that I knew was a terrible plan. But guess what, I did it anyway. After I hit my new 1RM, which was 460lbs, I dropped down to 405lbs and decided to do 3x3. On my third set I created a minor tear of my left medial hamstring. 👍 As a coach, I would never have a client hit a maximal lift and follow it up with multiple drop sets at 90% for 9 more reps. That’s stupid. It’s a failure to play the long game and it’s a failure to properly weight out “risk versus reward.” But guess what, I did it anyway, and no one was there to stop me and remind me how I’m not a special snowflake. 💪 On the plus side, you get to learn from that mistake by seeing how quickly I recover from the injury. It will be fast and easy. And I’ll give you a hint. R.I.C.E has absolutely no involvement in my quick recovery. Prepare for a paradigm shift....

One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is watching gym bros warm up their "rotator cups" ☕️by performing a STANDING external rotation while holding weight plates in each hand. 💡NEWS FLASH: Gravity has a DOWNWARD pull, so the only muscles opposing the resistance of those weight plates you're holding are your biceps & forearms! 🤦🏻‍♂️ . If you want to resist EXTERNAL ROTATION, you need to either lay on your side OR use a resistance band! I prefer using a resistance band to activate my external rotators before benching & upper body workouts... . If there’s something you want, if there’s a circumstance that you don’t 100% agree with - negotiate an alternative and ask to create a win/win or an alternative approach that can feel good for everyone involved.⁣ ⁣ Trust.⁣ ⁣ It’s surprising how easy it is once we utilize our voice and speak up for our needs. Something triggering you? Say it! Speak what it is and constructively find a solution.⁣ ⁣ What is something that is happening in your life that you are not 100% on board with? ⁣ ⁣ Is it a living situation? Plans friends have set up for the weekend? ⁣ ⁣ Do you have an alternative idea that may benefit everyone, yet for some reason you’re in fear for speaking up?⁣ ⁣ Do it. Bring air to what is creating that feeling. It’s like resistance. If we don’t, it can expand and become something toxic. Something we aren’t proud of. Something doesn’t feel good in yourself or relationships.⁣ ⁣ All from not speaking up for our needs. ⁣ ⁣ What would you rather? Reaching common ground and creating an experience that works for everyone? Or -⁣ ⁣ Waiting until the resistance turns into frustration, anxiety or resentment that can explode out of you creating more harm than good?⁣ ⁣ Just ask. Just say it. It’s easy, and it will free you, creating space for all the good shit waiting for you in life ✌🏼

Tested some 1RMs last week, and here’s what I got: 245lb sumo deadlift 125lb front squat 3x135lb bench (hips lifted when I attempted 145lb, but I probably could have gotten it with a spotter/lift off) While I have been training deadlifts pretty regularly, I don’t front squat too often and I probably haven’t bench pressed at all in the last year. It’s nice to know that the exercises I am doing are maintaining the strength I had before in those lifts. As Im trying to balance life, work, and school at the moment, my training goals are fairly vague and I’m simply aiming to workout consistently 4-6 times weekly. Movement alone has the power to increase the robustness and diversity of your gut microbiome. •• Both animal and humans studies have shown that exclusively increasing or introducing movement practices(no other interventions) individuals are able to change the microbial landscape of their gut to better regulate their metabolism, increase insulin sensitivity, and change their body composition, even if they have a history of being sedentary or have a high ratio fat to lean muscle. •• But here’s the catch-for culture will tell you to throw it all against the wall, find the “burniest” of all bootcamps, whip your bod into shape with high intensity interval training, leave it all on the gym floor, push until you can’t. •• But this approach backfires so often. Play is serious business • For my personal practice, I just do what’s fun and explore. Conventions are simple and profitable but they’re boring. I know the f out of them and can teach them to a T, but at some point the fundamentals have to be solid to the point where one can just explore and play again like when we were kids. Revisited from time to time for buffering but goodness, gotta take off the damn training wheels already and stop playing it safe and controlled all the time. Exploration is better for the body, better for the mind, and better for the soul and a great way to integrate all three rather than always isolating. Its like doing dips, shoulder presses, and bicep curls when you can do a damn curl-to-press and hit all marks. 🎯

BIG Recovery guy! man did i need it! after over 20 hours of driving and a long weekend in the woods of Maine i was toast! 🤕 not to mention the 300 axes i threw to put up a terrible 3-7 record.😡 this is what i did to feel better 1. foam rolled my back,shoulders and hips. 2. 90-90 diaphragmatic breathing- to decrease nervous system tone 3. ground based mobility to floss up the neck, spine, shoulders and hips 4. moved to some stationary dynamic stretches 5. reloaded the hips in 3 different single leg patterns! 6. played around with some primal patterns! if anyone would like anymore information feel free to DM me!

I’ve dropped 11 lbs of bodyfat and increased 14 lbs of muscle. This was all accomplished simultaneously in the same 4 month time frame. ☝️ How did I accomplish this? Most of you will refuse to accept the answer. You will swear I’m lying, made errors in tracking, or simply are unaware of other factors that explain the changes. 🤷‍♂️ Those that are around me the most know that I am one of the most routine driven, regimented, disciplined people when it comes to my life schedule, including food, exercise, and sleep. Consistency is the key to discovering your personal system for sustainable low levels of bodyfat and high levels of muscle mass. 👌 So how did I make such significant improvement in 4 months? 1️⃣ consistency of routines 2️⃣ eat more (80% of the food was highly nutritious and nutrient dense...not 100%) 3️⃣ sleep more (7 + hours a night plus some form of nap each day) 4️⃣ exercise less (less volume of work each week and lower intensity in most weekly sessions. I crossfitted...just did so at about 70% of effort most training days) 5️⃣ less alcohol (went from drinking 1-2 drinks every night to drinking 1-2 drinks, 3 times per week) • And before the haters chime in, the calories I lost from less alcohol each day was surpassed by the greater amount of food I ate each day. So yes, my calories have been the highest they’ve been in years...and I simultaneously lost bodyfat and built muscle mass. 👍 Lastly...I’m not some training newb. These changes occurred in a body that has 20 years of consistent training and nutrition...these are not newbie changes. 💪 I manipulated my hormonal environmental. That’s how I did it. It still amazes me how many clients come to me with a generic diagnosis, especially plantar fasciitis, without any real assessment of their pain. My newest client came to me for “plantar fasciitis” and bunions on both feet. When I asked her to point to the site of pain in her heel she points to the side of her heel. As you can see from the picture the plantar fascia runs from the anterior aspects of the heel out to the ball of the foot, not the side of the heel. But because her pain was not investigated in any way she was given the generic diagnosis of plantar fasciitis (on the side of her heel... nowhere near where the fascia attaches to the heel?!?!). All of this client’s issues where alignment based. We rotated her heel, as well as the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx of the big toe to even out her gait. Her heel hurt because she was putting all her weight there to avoid putting weight on the painful bunion. Her “plantar fasciitis” was really just a secondary symptom of the bunion. Sometimes we have to Inhibit instead of Stretch or Release a structure or an area. This is often the case with the TFL (Tensor Fasciae Latea) - especially on the left. I find this technique to work pretty well to do that. How to: Align the side of your body facing up (in this case left) in a straight line, make sure you don’t arch your back. Three part LOW LEVEL ISOMETRIC movement - Gently (1-2/10) (1.) Push your knee down, (2.) heel to the back wall and (3.) ’try’ and bend your knee. Hold for 3-5 breaths. If done correctly you’ll feel your glute (especially upper outer corner - anterior glute medius), adductor and hamstring activate. One of my favorite ways to squeeze in mobility, stretching, and to warm-up or cool-down the body is to incorporate some type of "flow". I consider a flow a sequence of movements that you perform immediately after one another. Ideally, I try to link them so that each movement supports the following. I like to perform some sort of flow every single day. Whether it be: before bed, after waking up, before a training session, after a training session, or while simply watching TV or standing around the house. They can be as short as 2 minutes, or as long as 20 minutes. The flow in the above video is just under 10 minutes. Give it a try, and let me know how you like it! Resistance is sometimes necessary-biologically, psychologically, developmentally, etc. Being able to let go when it’s no longer necessary is key. But, resistance as a ‘perceived’ necessity or a lingering resistance is a different story. With us reviewing research and knowledge we have collated and seeing if our system for when we have clients with a history of various levels of back pain could be improved. Plus, this meant a review of our programme and assessments in general. All to ensure we are doing all we can, to both help those with back pain and reduce the chances of our members developing back pain from things prescribed to them in our programmes. . When leading expert in back pain research Dr Stuart McGill @backfitpro says that most people referred to him have symptoms caused by trainers/coaches, however trainers/coaches can be the most effective professional in reducing back pain. We know which we would rather be and although we have had lots of success helping many people who have come to us with back pain where other training has not helped, it is important we always keep reviewing and looking at ways to improve. . Movement can be medicine for the body but like any medicine the wrong prescription or amount will have a negative effect. So it is important to us to ensure we reduce the risk of the wrong perscription. .
