I really didn’t know what to expect from this movie, being a sequel to one of the craziest movies I’ve seen. My BIGGEST question was, how can they possibly match the craziness and brutality of the original? Did they? Yes and No.
What I felt was so brilliant about #kingsmanthesecretservice
was how despite the comedy and over-the-Top violence, it still felt grounded and easy to follow. That’s where Golden Circle falls behind. The Golden Circle is pretty much an exact replica of the first one, but by doubling the amount of characters, making the action sequences more comedy-oriented, and also having a little too much profanity in EVERY scene, it’s a lot harder of a movie to take seriously, and becomes completely bonkers and cartoonish at various moments.
What I DID like about this movie is how it took the style of the church scene, tweaked it, and made ALL the fights filmed that way, and each set to music. As I’ve mentioned I absolutely LOVE that style of filming, also there are lots of callbacks to the first film in this one.
HOWEVER: the villain isn’t as strong as Samuel L Jackson in the first film... I never expected better. But Julianne Moore with her retro themed fortress, and cringeworthy puns and quirkiness worked for me. Considering how meta Valentine was. My final point is this, this movie gets bogged down by unnecessary relationship drama, and by killing off all the Kingsman, including Roxy and Merlin, it makes me feel like it was all an excuse to have Eggsy and Harry fight side by side, which is awesome don’t get me wrong... but the deaths could’ve easily been avoided.
With a great expanded cast including Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Julianne Moore, Halle Barry, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal AND Elton John, Kingsman: The Golden Circle May not be as strong as the original, but its certainly a stronger sequel than what most action franchises provide.
Final Verdict: 6.5/10
