| Have you explored the woodland loop at Homestead National Monument of America? This portion of the trail system at Homestead gives you a chance to step inside a rare ribbon of lowland burr oak forest that offered security to homesteaders in the form of resources that allowed for building a home, fence, fuel to burn, and animals to hunt. Come explore this area today! | The first Ranger hats were soft felt hats similar to those worn by the U.S. Army and the Texas Rangers in the 1800's. They had creases in the front and back of the hat creating four dents that formed a peak, nicknamed the "Montana peak" because it resembled the glacier peaks of Montana. | #HomesteadNM #NPS101 #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #NPS

| Hannah WHO? Hannah WHAT? Hannah Huston! Homestead National Monument of America is excited to announce the Grand Island native, soul-inspired vocalist @thehannahhuston will be joining us at the monument on Monday, August 21, the day of the Total Solar Eclipse! Hannah will be performing the National Anthem for the official welcome at the event. She will be available for autographs after her performance. Hannah auditioned for season ten (2016) of the U.S. singing competition The Voice, where she performed Allen Stone's "Unaware" for the show's coaches. Three of the four -- Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton -- wanted her for their teams. Huston selected Williams, and with his support, she reached the season's final four after performances of "Something's Got a Hold on Me" (Etta James), "Rolling in the Deep" (Adele), and "I Can't Make You Love Me" (Bonnie Raitt) among other songs that were, for the most part, classic R&B ballads. Huston ultimately finished second runner up. Immediately after the finale, studio versions of the songs Huston performed throughout the season were gathered for release, and "Every Breath You Take," a dramatic cover of the Police's 1983 number one pop hit, reached the Billboard Hot 100. In late 2016, Huston released her first single “I Alone Have Loved You”, and was voted to perform the song live on season eleven of The Voice. Follow Hannah on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat! @theHannahHuston To learn more about Hannah and her career you can visit: hannahhuston.co | #Eclipse2017 #DarknessOverThePrairie #NationalParks #HomesteadNM
| The Palmer-Epard Cabin was built in 1867 from mixed hardwoods, by George W. Palmer about 14 miles northeast of Homestead National Monument. The cabin now sits behind the Homestead Heritage Center, and fills the need of an interpretive feature at the Monument, giving a glimpse of life on the homestead frontier in the years following the Civil War. The Homestead Heritage Center opened in 2007 and is designed to represent the Homestead Act of 1862 with its spectacular views and unique roof line resembling a single bottom plow moving through the sod. These buildings share the story of the Homestead Act. Standing in contrast, the Palmer-Epard cabin and the Homestead Heritage Center endure long days and nights on the prairie; just as a homesteader would, so that their stories can be heard. Visit www.nps.gov/home to learn more about the impacts left on the nation by the Homestead Act of 1862. #Homesteading #HomesteadNM #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #NPS101 #NationalParks #OptOutside #Landscape |

Fair warning the road turns into a gravel road just past Homestead so pay attention to your GPS unless you like to off-road. Junior Ranger badge ... check. | Fun fact! Used as a means for fencing livestock, the basic design for barbed wire was introduced in 1868. As pioneers began making their own, different styles were showing up all over homesteads. | Our Summer Campfire Series continues tonight at 7:00 p.m! Come out to the Homestead National Monument of America Education Center and learn about the state of Nebraska and it's homesteading connections through story and song! David Seay will be presenting "Nebraska Territory Stories" celebrating the rich history of Nebraska. "In this upbeat presentation David performs folk music that existed at the time Nebraska became a state on March 1, 1867. Between tunes he discusses how these songs provide glimpses into history by telling stories of everyday life of the pioneers during the 13 years before Nebraska statehood. This cheerful show works particularly well for family audiences as it has opportunities for volunteers to come up front and participate. Instruments featured are banjo, harmonica, whistles, and mountain dulcimer." | #HomesteadNM #FindYourPark #OptOutside #EncuentraTuParque #NPS101

| "There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm." -Willa Cather Homesteaders had to put up with harsh storms that often devastated their hard work. But even the scariest storms bring life-giving rain, and give way to beautiful sunshine. Today, we are thankful for the calm. Please note: parts of the trail system at Homestead National Monument remained closed for safety reasons. Stay tuned for updates. | #NPS101 #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #Homesteading #HomesteadNM

| Why wasn't the moon hungry? Because it's FULL! All jokes aside, the parking lot at the Heritage Center will remain open tonight (June 9, 2017) to allow you to view the Strawberry "Mini-moon". "We're all, of course, familiar with the branding of supermoon, when the full moon coincides (or very nearly so) with perigee — that point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth. On such occasions, the moon appears somewhat larger than normal because of its closeness to Earth. Well, tonight's (June 9) moon is the opposite of that circumstance; a full moon that nearly coincides with apogee, the moon's farthest point from Earth." | (Photo Credit: Tim Graff) (source: space.com) #HomesteadNM #Homestead #Lunar #FindYourPark #NPS101
| Follow our current Artist-in-Residence as she explores Homestead National Monument! Emily Sullivan (@emilyjbsullivan ) is a plein air painter from Boulder, CO and will be at the Monument until May 30, 2017. Join Emily Sullivan for a plein air workshop at Homestead National Monument of America's Education Center on Sunday, May 28 at 2:00 p.m. Participants will learn briefly about how and why artists use plein air drawing and painting as part of their practice, including Sullivan's work, and try their hand at plein air sketching in the park. All ages and skill levels welcome - more important than the final outcome of the drawing is the experience of "seeing" and spending time carefully considering the landscape around you. | #HomesteadNM #NPS101 #ArtinthePark #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #Artist
| On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, which opened government-owned land to small family farmers (“homesteaders”). By granting 160 acres of free land to claimants, it allowed nearly any man or woman a "fair chance." The individual had to be at least 21 years old, and was required to improve the land by building a home and farming the land. The Act turned over vast amounts of the public domain to private citizens. 270 millions acres, or 10% of the area of the United States was claimed and settled under this act. Homestead National Monument of America, located in Southeast Nebraska, commemorates this Act and the far-reaching effects it had upon the landscape and people. Located on the site of the one of the first homesteads claimed, this National Monument is a tribute to the courage and tenacity of the settlers and original inhabitants of this land. Visit Homestead National Monument of America to explore this tallgrass prairie landscape, tour historic buildings and view museum exhibits that tell the story of this important era of American history. | #Homesteading #History #NPS101 #HomesteadNM #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque

We recently explored Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice. We love National Parks and we were excited to realize that we have a site that's just an hour drive from Lincoln. The monument is located on the first land that was claimed under the Homestead Act of 1862. We hiked the trails that led through the restored prairie and tried to imagine the struggles of making a home there and living off of the land. The site also has a visitor's center whose unique architecture was designed to reflect the appearance of a plow moving through soil. Inside you'll find exhibitions related to the lives of the first homesteaders and a gift shop. We're looking forward to visiting again soon. They are currently hosting a film festival honoring Nebraska's heritage in celebration of the state's 150th sesquicentennial. ⛏🌾🇺🇸 . . . @homesteadnps @midwest.nps @nationalparkservice #homesteadnm #beatricenebraska #nebraska #visitnebraska #negameandparks #iheartthegreatplains #explorenebraska #midwestnationalparks #nationalparks #findyourpark #optoutside #ne150 #nemiles #midwestmoment #hkscoutsne2017 #hkscoutsbeatrice #hkscoutsneoutdoors #hkscoutsnemuseums #hkscoutsnearchitecture
