Our culture is beautiful and unique and poppin'. Many times we grow up being taught to distance ourself from certain aspects. To look at white celebrity and style and beauty as if it is better. I grew up loving Marilyn Monroe (I mean she's also a GEMINI like me, but I digress) and knew nothing about the dopeness of Rita Moreno until I intentionally looked for my own cultural icons. I was an avid reader of white authored novels and it wasn't until late High School that I discovered we (Latinx, Caribbean) wrote books too! I finally saw myself. It was mind blowing to me as a young girl. This is deliberate. A way to make us feel inferior. A way to make us want to be something more than ourselves, desire a proximity to whiteness because it is instilled in us since birth to be "superior." It's why practically everyone is white on TV shows & movies, even on Spanish Speaking stations!! It's so deliberate and insidious. So we grow up wanting to distance ourselves from our culture, our customs, our neighborhoods, our ancestors. Because we have been devalued and in that devaluation we try and cling to something we are not in order to be something we are shown is more. Our culture is so beautiful, our people are beautiful, so genius, so vibrant, so talented, so original. It's why I want to highlight & celebrate it/us as much as possible. To remind us, all we gotta do is look in the mirror if we want inspiration. We are more than enough. We are dope af. Vaya.
