A couple weeks ago, our water quality team had the pleasure of working with science students from @asd_leopards to collect dragonfly larvae from Calf Creek, a tributary of the Buffalo River. Dragonflies can tell us a lot about the health of a waterway, and those collected will be tested for traces of mercury. Thanks, Arkansas School for the Deaf! #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque (Photo description: A group of students and park scientists pose with nets on the bank of a wooded creek.)

Traveling alone is amazing because it’s up to you to step out of your comfort zone to meet new people and have new experiences. But traveling alone is also easy (at least for my personality type) because you decide where to go, what to do, when to stop, etc. Traveling with someone is challenging because you have to find middle ground and compromise. But traveling with someone is also amazing because you are sharing incredible experiences with someone and it’s likely that you’ll end up doing something you would never do otherwise. Honestly as much as I enjoy the solitude of traveling alone, it’s quite amazing to have found a travel buddy. It’s forced me to slow down and to feel comfortable not doing the most extreme things. While we are two very different people, I think we’ve found a happy middle ground in our travels where we both step a little out of our comfort zones. I’m so excited to spend my life exploring the majestic beauty and learning the complex history of this planet we call Earth. Also I’m excited for a trip with a little more of traveling my style. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #optoutside #findyourpark #encuentratuparque #greatsmokymountains #mountains #raodtrip #roadtripusa #wanderlust #travel #traveltheworld #travelbuddy
#Repost @womensrightsnps (@get_repost ) ・・・ As women in upstate New York demanded the recognition of certain rights, women in the Southwest were beginning to face new types of challenges. Several months before the First Woman’s Rights Convention, the United States acquired large portions of what are now California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico at the end of the Mexican-American War. The residents who remained living on this land were now governed by the American legal system with its English origins. The consequences of this political change were often profound for women. Unlike the Spanish legal tradition inherited by Mexico, this new system of laws no longer protected a married woman’s right to own property and retain wages. As women in Seneca Falls, New York expressed outrage at the long “history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man towards woman,” some of these inequalities had only recently become a reality for many new Mexican-American citizens. #HispanicHeritageMonth #EncuentraTuParque 📷: Portion of "Map of the United States, Including Land Acquired by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, that Accompanied President Polk's Annual Message to Congress in December 1848," @usnatarchives

Over the last half century, visitors have discovered the most extensive exposed fossil reef in the world, the highest peaks in Texas, four distinct ecosystems, desert and dunes, flora and fauna, and moments that will last a lifetime. In 1878, Captain Thomas C. Lebo and troops of Company K, 10th United States Cavalry, conducted a scouting expedition from the Fort Davis military post. Coming across the area known as Rattlesnake Springs, he described it as follows. “Grazing here is very good; wood is very scarce. The spring flows a very large stream of water which runs about one mile nearly due E. (east) and empties into Black River, which at this point is a very large stream (an abundance of small fish).” For several decades after the Civil War, Rattlesnake Springs was utilized by the United States Army as both a campground and staging area. Today, Rattlesnake Springs is a part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, supplies the park’s drinking water, and has a beautiful picnic area among the trees. What emotions do you think the soldiers would have had upon seeing Rattlesnake Springs after crossing the arid and dry expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert? Current fall colors status - Sunday, October 14, 2018 . More color is visible in Upper Dog Canyon, along the trail to Guadalupe Peak, adjacent to the Devil's Hall, and along a few portions of McKittrick Canyon (pictured). Most of the trees that will produce full, colorful foliage have not as yet, but colder weather is expected this week in most areas of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. . The fall colors season in Guadalupe Mountains National Park typically begins in mid-October and continues through mid-November. #ScienceSaturday - This recent photo of colorful leaves in Medano Canyon above the dunes prompts the question: Where do autumn colors come from? There are three basic color pigments in most leaves: 🍁Green chlorophyll is the green substance in leaves that converts sunlight to energy through photosynthesis; 🍁Yellow and orange carotenoids are found in bananas, corn, carrots, etc., as well as leaves and grasses; 🍁Red and purple anthocyanins give color to cranberries, strawberries, grapes, etc., and are present within the cells of leaves and grasses. As days shorten and photosynthesis slows down, green chlorophyll slowly disappears from leaves. Depending on moisture, temperature, and plant genetics, carotenoids and anthocyanins become visible, brightening chilly autumn days! With flooding occurring across the floodplain, you may find animals in places they would not normally be. This Southern Watersnake, also known as a Banded Watersnake, was found while rangers were clearing the boardwalk. This non-venomous snake may look similar and be found in the same places as the venomous Water Moccasin, it is in fact harmless to you. As with all wildlife, please give it space, and it will gladly be on its way and leave you alone!
