"You just fucked with the wrong Mexican." I'm going to tell you guys the plot of this movie... but I'm not going to point the obvious parallel to real life out... because it should be obvious.
An ex-cop turned day labourer -named Machete- is thrown into a chaotic mess when he is framed for the attempted assasination of a corrupt politician -whose anti-Hispanic platform rests on a giant wall being built on the border.
Say what you will, but I think Machete is Robert Rodriguez's crowning achievement. It has the goofy humor, the social relevance, the gore, and the badassery. It has babes, blood, and bullets. It has everything... and then just a little bit more. Rodriguez may not be my absolute favorite filmmaker since a lot of his films just aren't made for me -SpyKids is a great family film but not really the type of movie I sit down and watch on my own. But as a creative force, I absolutely respect his method and his eclectic body of work. What makes his films so vibrant is his pure ambition. El Mariachi, Desperado, and Machete all have big ideas that outmatch their smaller budgets, but that doesn't stop Robert from telling these great stories the way he wants to tell them. Machete especially.
Machete is an exploitation epic, with a Latin flair! Starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Don Johnson, Robert DeNiro, and Cheech Marin, the cast is stacked with talent and charisma. Danny Trejo is especially lovable as the titular Machete. He's a rougher version of James Bond, with a cool attitude, bad ass fight scenes, and an uncanny ability to exude sex appeal despite his scraggly appearance.
The violence is comically over-the-top -this would make a great double feature with Shoot 'em Up- and the camp value is played up hard.
It's a charming and fun trip, but it still packs an important and heavy message about immigration and the double-handed nature of a system that thrives on cheap labor while punishing those who are willing to work. Machete is a cry for justice as well as a blast that can be enjoyed with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek.
Just watch it!
