: Air pollution blankets the night sky across Seoul, South Korea.
Seoul was recently hit with dramatic amounts of fine particulate matter with the AQI Index hitting above 200 micrograms per cubic meter. The World Health Organization recommends people only be outside around 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
In a recent survey, 97% of Koreans reported to feel physical or mental distress from high air pollution levels.
Much of Korea’s electricity is sourced from burning coal, which is one of the main precursors to air pollution and climate change. Indeed, the air pollution issue has reignited debate on the current governments anti-nuclear energy policy, which has lead to the increase in usage and dependence on coal. —
