ᴍʏ ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ ᴏғ "sʜᴇᴀ ʙᴜᴛᴛᴇʀ ʙᴀʙʏ":
•Concept: A very lustful and mystical record, that’s pays homage to Afrocentric beauty, relationships and sexuality. Ari’s calling for a highly-sensual, intimate, and free-spirited sex session without shame with her lover, even down to the location of the act. She reveals this with the line “And if you really down, we can get lost in an alley, make love by a trashcan, ayy”.
•Visuals: The scenes bounce back and forth between reality and fantasy. One minute they’re in a normal domestic setting, then transfer into a religious one, that’s reminiscent of a voodoo love ritual, with multi-aspirations of her dancing around him in a loose, skimpy silhouette gown, while both are covered in tattoos and surrounded by scattered flowers across the floor. The hazy and fiery-red colors represent the heat of passion and sexual tension in the atmosphere around them. The color red is usually associated with carnality and romance. •Production: The music fits the title excellently. It’s smooth and rich like butter, with a sultry, rhythmic, slight-jazzy arrangement, that provokes a comparison to Sadé Adu’s work. A similar sound to “Wild Thoughts” is present too, basing off the heavy-Spanish guitar influence being used. •Vocally: Her light, witchy, high-priestess like voice that mirrors artists like Erykah Badu, Janelle Monaé, Jill Scott and even Nina Simone, with its powerful and soulful quality. Her vocals are complimented by the the poetic lyrics and hypnotic-harmonies of J Cole, making the hook an instant ear-bug that bridges the song together, effortlessly.
Overall, I’d say this’s a top 3 bop from the ‘Creed ll’ soundtrack and probably the breakout-hit Ari needed to make herself a visible component in R&B. #arilennox #jcole
