As field semester ramps up I hope to get more photos on here! Spotted this little guy yesterday on a walk for my Field Botany class. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📷: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio multicaudata) 👶 - The ETST is a member of the Swallowtail family of butterflies (Papilionidae) • Pictured here is the caterpillar for this butterfly. This little guy is the 3rd instar that the larval goes through. Insects (usually larvae) go through distinct stages of development. They molt and change (grow) between each stage and are often distinct and unique at each stage (but not always). Each stage is called an "instar" and being able to ID these can help determine the age of the specimen you have • These guys usually grow to the third instar roughly 3 weeks after emerging from their eggs. This caterpillar is often referred to as the "Bird Poop Caterpillar" because of it's coloration and shape. These caterpillars usually eat Ash leaves as well as Chokecherry, Bitter Cherry, and Hoptree! • The Genus name (Papilio) means "Butterfly" in latin, while the species name (glaucus) comes from an ancient sea god. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #environmentalscience #entomology #youngentomologist #science #nature #naturephotography #amatuerphotography #insects #insects #insectsofinstagram #fieldbiology #fieldwork #urbanentomology #ruralentomology #college #papilionidae #papilio #papilioglaucus #biogeography

Last night I was lucky enough to be able to attend a photography workshop hosted by @tscharke and @sonyaustralia . It was so inspirational to hear from such a talented photographer such as Luke, find out how he composed some of his amazing shots and also to learn in more detail about some of the more advanced development techniques. . I’ll be putting everything I learned into practice very soon and sharing here! . Thank you again Luke! ☺️☺️
