Today I did a loving kindness meditation and I thought of you all. 💗
Visible or invisible, near or far, born or to be born, May all beings be happy. May they be joyous and live in safety and stability ✨
After a really dope social worker helped me navigate my medical transition while as was in the military and provided me with a tremendous amount support, I knew as soon as I was able to separate from service, I wanted to go back to college for social work. I’m so thankfully to be in this program now and I believe I’ve really found my niche. I’m interested in getting to know other trans* and queer folks who are social work students or in the field... If you are drop a comment or tag someone you know ⬇️💬

Watching you grow and learn is one of the greatest joys of my life. Having you take the strides you have in this life, right in front of me, inspires me daily! You are the light in everyone’s life. You light the world with your soul. You are the beacon of hope for children like you and for the parents like me. You are the answer to all of my prayers, my reason for living and my guiding light in this not so forgiving world. Thank you for giving me purpose. Thank you for making my life mean something. I had an epiphany this week about a few things, one of them being how I can make more of an impact because of the things you taught me. The other being how natural it is. You are an angel from heaven sent here to make this world better! I’m grateful God chose me to be your mom! .

This was a good day. Jojo loves to read and so when I heard that we were moving to the “storybook capital America” I knew he was in for a treat. This was taken at an outdoor museum dedicated to children’s storybooks. It was incredibly cold outside but he loved reading all the benches and looking at all the displays. He talked so much about those books and others he couldn’t wait to read. I loved hearing his little excited voice talk about reading.
HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH FRIENDS! 🙌🏾😍💃🏽
Every year I like to celebrate by honoring African American women, men, children, and humans who have inspired and are continuing to inspire me day to day. These amazing humans also inspire millions of other people by their stories, the things they do for a living, and their service to the world. These are in no order and what I say just comes from the heart.

I have an embarrassing story to tell. I applied for a job and I didn’t get it. (Wait—that’s not the embarrassing part.) The person who interviewed me was kind enough to provide feedback on my interview. But instead of listening and utilizing the observations, I was defensive and spent the time telling this person why he made the wrong choice and why I should have been selected for the job.
My decision had three outcomes:
1. Wasted time for the person offering me feedback
2. Missed opportunity for personal growth
3. A damaged relationship
I blew it! But in reflecting on this interaction, I learned why my mindset going into the conversation impacted the outcome. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol S. Dweck, explains that a Growth Mindset is the belief that we can get better. A Fixed Mindset is a belief that people are the way they are.
It is important for us to understand how a Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset are different and why it impacts how we interact with new challenges, feedback, and hard work.
Growth Mindset: Challenges are worth it because even when we fail, we will learn and get better. A person with this perspective is willing to accept potential failure and understands that if they aren’t failing, they aren’t growing. New challenges are about the opportunity to get better and not about what people think about us.
Fixed Mindset: New challenges are only an opportunity to look bad. A person with this perspective will not want to take on new challenges. They’ll want to stick with what they know because doing something new can be risky and lead to failure.
Growth: Feedback is a chance to grow. It is not about defining who we are in the present, it is about helping us be and do better in the future. We understand that we are nowhere near our potential and will always say “thank you” when someone makes an effort to help us by providing us feedback.
Fixed: Takes feedback personally and gets defensive. A person with this mindset is only interested in hearing what they do well.
What kind of mindset do you approach your day with, and how does that impact the outcome?
