Yesterday I recommended a film about pop culture obsession... so here’s something I was obsessed with in the ‘90s - a very weird, brilliant and unique videogame called Captain Blood. It’s about flying through the galaxy in a biomechanical spacecraft, sending spacefish drones to explore (and maybe destroy) planets, conversing with alien species (using a one-of-a-kind icon based language), persuading duplicates of yourself to come aboard your ship only for you to vampirically extract their ‘vital fluid’ to keep yourself alive...
Its sense of discovery, intrigue, unrestrained creativity and out of its head oddness all made a powerful impression on me. I thought about it every day, learned its every secret, scoured the Internet for other believers, started a fan site, emailed a couple of the guys who worked on it. So powerful was the game’s influence that I was dreaming about it and at one point I thought maybe I should get professional help. Luckily I’m okay now but I still love this crazy piece of art; there’s nothing else like it, it influenced me in a lot of ways and it’s probably one of the reasons I work in games today. 🤖
