What is the difference between High-intensity Interval Training (sprint interval training) and High-intensity Power Training? EXERCISE SELECTION!!! In HIPT, we only select exercises that develop power. For example, plyometrics, jumping, medicine ball exercises, and Olympic variations are optimal selection, but of course, we can also use sprinting/running. If you decide to use loaded exercises, the load-use will be selected based on the length of each workout bout. For example, if you are using clean hang high pulls for 3-4 seconds, then you should use more load than if you are using a protocol of 6-8 seconds (this should be obvious). The load should not exceed 60–70% (never above 80%) of the person’s one-repetition max with loaded exercises because of safety reasons. If they use too much weight, it can increase the risk of injury, especially during Olympic variations (high pulls and presses). It’s essential that you exert maximal velocity during each repetition, so using lighter loads is fine; you will just perform more repetitions during each bout. When you create a HIPT (and HIIT) workout, you have endless possibilities for structuring it. I am going to give you an example of moderate and low-intensity exercises performed in a circuit training format. The work to rest ratio is 1:3. 1. Explosive push-up variation: 6 seconds of work; 18 seconds of rest 2. Split jumps: 6 seconds of work; 18 seconds of rest 3. Medicine ball slams: 6 seconds of work; 18 seconds of rest 4.
