One of my favorite HIIT protocols comes from the study conducted by the endocrinologist James Clark.
The study is: "The Use of an 8-Week Mixed-Intensity Interval Endurance-Training Program Improves the Aerobic Fitness of Female Soccer Players." The protocol in this study was arranged into 6-minute intervals. Each 6-minute interval was divided into three mixed intensity intervals.
The first interval consisted of 30 seconds of active recovery, which consisted of submaximal jogging, followed by 30 seconds of 90–100% of maximal effort.
The second interval consisted of 60 seconds of submaximal jogging, followed by 60 seconds of 80–90% of maximal effort.
And the third interval consisted of 90 seconds of jogging, followed by 90 seconds of 70–80% of maximal effort.
I have used this version (on the Assault Airbike) a lot, but today I decided to try out a modified version:
This was extremely hard since I could jack up the intensity.
Here is my Assault Airbike workout:
15-sec at 700+ watts intensity
30-sec at 550+ watts intensity
45-sec at 400+ watts intensity
I completed six rounds (the goal was eight rounds)
The first two rounds were comfortable, but that changed quickly.
In round three I could feel the fatigue kick in, and the last two rounds were torture 🙂. There is no health for beginner in running at -20°C here.. But, damn it, i didn't go running for too long to push myself onto the treadmill!
And yes, i really love running and i can share!
