The Silence of the Lambs premieres in theaters in the top spot with a $13.7 million opening weekend. It would stay #1
for 5 straight weeks, until finally falling to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. The movie is based on the 1988 novel of the same name. Before Jodie Foster was cast, both Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan turned down the role. It is one of only 3 films (along with It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) to win Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay. On a budget of $19 million, the film would go on to earn $130.7 million domestically (and another $142 million overseas), the 4th biggest movie of 1991.
