On the bottom is an original colour picture taken of the celebrating crowds in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in September 1944, after the city had been liberated by Allied troops.
On the top is a scene depicting these celebrations in the episode Replacements, in the Band of Brothers miniseries.
Eindhoven was the first major city to be liberated after the Operation Market Garden parachute drop, when the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, working with the local Dutch Resistance, reached the city on 18th September.
By nightfall the Irish Guards Armoured Division had also established itself in the city. The city was subjected to German aerial bombardment that night.
Then on the night of 19/20 September Eindhoven was bombed by 78 German bombers. The Allies had no anti-aircraft guns in the city, and the result was over 9,000 buildings damaged, and over 1,000 casualties, including 227 killed.
The Dutch Resistance had gotten word of the planned German attack and were able to alert the Allies and civilians to the oncoming risk. If not for this, there surely would have been more lives lost. ♠♠
