Remembering Harry F. Welsh today on the anniversary of his passing on 21 Jan, 1995. Harry was born on 27 September, 1918, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He excelled in swimming and diving as a young man and won state titles in both. He enlisted in the Army in April, 1942, and volunteered for the Airborne. He was placed in 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He made the rank of Sergeant 6 times but each time was demoted to Private for fighting. But his commanding officers saw potential in the "tough little Irishman" and recommended him for Officer Candidate School. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant and in May, 1943, he was assigned to 1st platoon, E Company, 506th PIR. Welsh jumped with Easy Company on D-Day into Normandy. He would take over command of the company for a time when Winters was wounded. On return to England, he was promoted to 1st Lt and made XO of the company. He then jumped into The Netherlands in September, 1944, for Operation Market Garden. He was later promoted to Battalion level and headed to Bastogne in December, 1944, with HQ Company of 2nd Battalion. It was here he was severely wounded in the leg, but rejoined the unit after the campaign once recovered. Welsh would be awarded 2 Bronze Star medals and 2 Purple Heart medals during his service. After the war, Harry returned home and married Kitty Grogan, who did indeed use his reserve parachute to make her wedding dress. He worked in education until his retirement in 1983. Harry was portrayed by Rick Warden in Band of Brothers Currahee and Sláinte, Harry 🍀 ♠♠ #bandofbrothers #easycompany #506thpir #parachuteinfantry #101stairbornedivision #screamingeagles #82ndairbornedivision #ww2 #wwii #harrywelsh #richardwarden #ww2history #history #rip #paratrooper #airborneinfantry

Major Winters: Part 2: Richard D. Winters made his first combat jump as a 1st Lieutenant on D-Day, 6th June 1944, into Normandy, France. Due to the crash of the plane carrying the company Commanding Officer, Lt Thomas Meehan, Winters now assumed the role of CO. It was a baptism of fire, as later that morning he was sent out with initially just 12 men and told to "Take care of the fire along that hedgerow" aimed at the landings on Utah Beach. The Brecourt Manor assault + subsequent taking of the German guns + artillery battery has been cited as a textbook case of small-unit strategy. Winters was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions that day. Easy Co would go on to be involved in the taking + defending of Carentan, an important strategic town. On July 1st, 2 days after Easy had come off the front line, Winters was informed he was to be promoted to Captain, this became official after the return to England. Winters also officially became CO of the company. He would lead them in the jump into The Netherlands in September 1944 for Operation Market Garden. But further promotion was in Winters' future and 5th October would be the last day he would see combat with Easy + the last time he would fire a weapon in combat. On 9th Oct he was made Executive Officer of 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR. Winters would always be there for his men, whether it be right on the front line with the Battalion through the hellish conditions of the Battle of the Bulge, or sparing Easy any more casualties when he ignored Colonel Sink's order of a 2nd patrol over the river at Haguenau. On March 8th, 1945, he received his promotion to Major. Soon after, he took over as acting CO of 2nd Battalion, when Bob Strayer was promoted to regimental staff. Winters returned to the U.S in Nov 1945 and was officially discharged in June 1946. In 1951 he was recalled back to active duty for the war in Korea. He went to Fort Dix, NJ, to train officers, but feeling disillusioned with that he applied for Ranger school. He received orders for overseas deployment, but a bill was passed stating anyone called up involuntarily could resign. Winters left the military + returned to Pennsylvania. ♠♠
Major Winters: Part 1: Major Richard D. Winters, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. ♠ Winters was born on this day 101 years ago, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He would go on to become a distinguished leader during WW2. Winters first entered military life in 1941 just after graduating top of his class from college. At the time it was compulsory to complete 1 year of military service and Winters decided to get this out of the way before staring his business career. He volunteered for the Army and was sent to Camp Croft in Sep 1941 for basic training. He remained there to train incoming soldiers. Once Pearl Harbour occured and the U.S entered WW2, all soldiers were now enlisted until the end of the war, and the Army began training in more Officers. Even though Winters was still a Private, his commanding officer recommended him for Officer's Candidate School. In April, 1942, while at Fort Benning, Georgia, he first saw the new paratrooper units train, and was impressed by their fitness and attitude. Winters and Lewis Nixon graduated as commissioned officers of the U.S Army in July 1942. Volunteering for the Airborne, they arrived at Camp Toombs (Toccoa) in mid-August and began paratrooper training. Winters was promoted to a 1st Lt in October. The officers of the 506th PIR were to complete jump training prior to the enlisted men. This began at Toccoa, and Winters completed his 5 required jumps in one day to earn his jump wings. However, an accident on the too short runway caused the training to be moved to Fort Benning. While at Camp Mackall in May, 1943, Winters was made the Executive Officer of Easy Company, a role he had been fulfilling for several months. In Sep 1943 Winters and the 101st Airborne shipped to England to continue training for the invasion of Europe.... ♠♠ #bandofbrothers #easycompany #majordickwinters #dickwinters #506thpir #101stairbornedivision #ww2 #wwii

Staff Sergeant William “WildBill” Guarnere served in Easy-Company, 506th P.I.R. 101st Airborne Division, also known as the Band of Brothers. Bill was a Toccoa original as he started his training in Camp Toccoa in August 1942. Just before they jumped into Normandy Bill found out that his brother Henry Guarnere was killed during the Battle of Monte Casino in Italy. Bill earned his nickname “WildBill” on D-Day as he fought relentless against the Germans to avenge his brother. It earned him a Silver Star as he took part in silencing the German guns at Brécourt Manor. Bill also fought in The Netherlands where he was wounded the first time and evacuated back to a hospital. Bill went AWOL from the hospital and rejoined Easy-Company just before they left for Bastogne. On January 3rd 1945 the Germans put up an artillery barrage on the Bous Jacques. It was one of Bill’s best friends, Joe Toye who lost his leg during the artillery barrage. When the barrage stopped it was Bill who ran up to help Joe and all of the sudden another artillery barrage came in. It was during this barrage that Bill lost a leg as well. Bill returned to Europe multiple times after ww2 and was always willing to share his experience. Bill passed away in March 2014 at the age of 90. #bandofbrothers #ww2 #101stairborne #101stairbornedivision

The Potbellied Stove Bandits! On January 17th, 1945, the 101st Airborne Division were relieved and sent on a 160 mile journey from Bastogne, Belgium, to Alsace, France, with the train travelling at walking pace. 3rd platoon's Paul Rogers and Earl McClung were in one of the boxcars. McClung recalled "Around the end of January we were sent to Alsace to take up position along the Moder River. We were put in boxcars for the trip. There was straw in the cars, but it was still very cold. Paul Rogers was platoon sergeant then, and we pulled into a little French town. He says 'We got to have some heat. We've been freezing to death for two months'. There was a guy sitting around a potbellied stove in the middle of this station. So I turned to another guy and says 'You got leather gloves, put them on'. The train was going pretty slow so we jumped out, walked up, and got the stove....still going full blast with the coal in it...and put it in the boxcar. The guy just sat there looking, like 'the hell you guys doing?'. But we got Rogers his heat anyway. That warmed us up. Paul always says 'We were the only boxcar in that whole damn train with a potbellied stove'" ♠♠ #bandofbrothers #easycompany #506thpir #parachuteinfantry #paratrooper #101stairbornedivision #screamingeagles #ww2 #wwii #worldwar2 #battleofthebulge #earlmcclung #paulrogers #history #ww2history

The M4 "Sherman" tank was an allied medium tank, of which much variants were made. The tank was made as a better variant/improvement of the previous type the _Medium Tank M3_ , also called the "Lee". The tank was named after the famous Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. The tank itself was the workhorse of the American Armoured Corps, but the British and Canadians also liked it. The tank itself had next to a 75 mm. gun many additional extra´s to give the tank a specific rule in combat, so had some times an improved 76 mm. gun. So had the "Flegel" tank a bunch of steel cables attached to the front to disarms mines ( the cables had to be replaced after a few explosions as cables would have been blown of ) But there also is for instance a "Calliope" on which 60 rockets placed upon the top of the tank which could have been fired of at will Another version was the British made "Firefly" which in the view of the British was an improvement as now, with the 17 Poundre gun they could engage "Tiger" tanks ( Pz. Kpfw. VI ) This tank, however wasn't called a Firefly without a reason as they when gotten to hot inside, explode due to the shells getting off. The exact number of Shermans made is 49.239. After the war Shermans were used for example in Korea, Vietnam and the Israel War. #bandofbrothers #easycompany #506thpir #currahee #paratrooper #parachuteinfantry #101stairbornedivision #screamingeagles #airborneww2 #wwii #worldwar2 #war #ww2 #ww2miniseries #ww2movie #soldier #bootcamp #army #thankful #bandofbrothersisthebest #bastogne #edit #hbo #heroes #wings #tank #sherman
